WTC Points Table - Pakistan Jumps Ahead of India after Guwahati Loss vs South Africa Sinks India to 5th Place

South Africa defeated India by 408 runs in the second Test played in Guwahati. This is India's biggest defeat in history by runs. The visiting team also won the series 2-0. Team India, bowled out for 201 in the first innings, was reduced to 140 in the second.

South Africa scored 490 runs in the first innings

Skipper Temba Bavuma had won the toss and opted to bat first in Guwahati. Aiden Markram (38) and Ryan Rickelton (35) gave the team a solid start with an 82-run partnership for the first wicket. Tristan Stubbs (49) and Temba Bavuma (41) added 84 for the third wicket. India's bowlers were ineffective in the first innings, as evidenced by lower-order batsman Marco Jansen's quickfire 93, helping South Africa reach a total of 489.

Senuran Muthusamy top-scored for South Africa in the first innings, scoring 109 runs with the help of two sixes and 10 fours. This was his first Test century. Marco Jansen made history by hitting seven sixes in his explosive innings of 93 runs. He became the batsman with the joint-highest number of sixes in a Test innings against India.

Kuldeep Yadav took the most wickets for India in the first innings, taking four, but his economy rate was 3.94, conceding 115 runs. Bumrah and Siraj took two wickets each, but they also failed to contain the run-scoring.

India's first innings was bundled out for 201 runs.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul gave India a solid start in the first innings, sharing a 65-run opening stand for the first wicket. However, India's middle order completely flopped. Rahul (22) was dismissed by Keshav Maharaj, after which Yashasvi Jaiswal scored his half-century. He too fell to Simon Harmer for 58. This was India's second wicket at 95, followed by the seventh at 122. That meant six wickets fell within 27 runs.

Sai Sudharsan (15), Dhruv Jurel (0), Rishabh Pant (7), Ravindra Jadeja (6), and Nitish Kumar Reddy (10) were dismissed cheaply. Marco Jansen took six wickets in the innings. It was only the partnership between Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav that helped India cross 200. Sundar scored 48, while Kuldeep made just 19, despite facing 134 balls.

India had a target of 549 to win.

South Africa took a 288-run lead in their first innings. The visitors declared their second innings at 260/5, setting India a target of 549 runs to win. Tristan Stubbs scored 93 runs in the second innings, falling short of his century. With his wicket, Bavuma declared the innings.

After losing back-to-back Test matches against South Africa, India slid from fourth to fifth place in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table.  They presently have a PCT of 48.15 percent.
South Africa, on the other hand, has cemented its second-place position in the WTC 2025-27 points standings.  They are presently at 75.00 PCT%.

Australia retains the top position in the WTC 2025-27 points standings.  The Baggy Greens have 100% PCT.  The 2023 WTC champions have won all four matches thus far in the current WTC cycle.
