The most successful IPL franchise bagged a wooden spoon in the recently completed season of the Indian Premier League as they barely managed to win four matches from 14 games.
Despite retaining most of its core, Mumbai suffered heavily with its consistency. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav were retained ahead of the auction. The franchise splurged whopping INR 15.25 crores on the services of Ishan Kishan. Moreover, the contracts of Jofra Archer, Dewald Bravis and Daniel Sams went unjustified.
Mumbai Indians continued their ritual of losing the first match of the tournament. The franchise bagged an unwanted record of eight consecutive defeats before winning a single game in the IPL. MI tasted its first victory of the IPL 2022 in the ninth fixture against Rajasthan Royals.
It was just a horrifying experience for the five times IPL champions as they couldn’t perform up to their expectations.
However, the franchise would be happy as the team somehow managed to find its mojo towards the end of the league stage. Mumbai added four victories to its name in IPL 2022 in the last six matches and finished the tournament on a high.
After a disappointing and unforeseen season, Mumbai would be hopeful and optimistic for a reversal in the performance of its players in the next edition of the tournament. The IPL 2023 will be special for the franchise in blue and gold as the fans may see two of the finest bowlers of modern-day cricket bowl in tandem (Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer).
Also, the likes of Dewald Bravis, Tim David and Daniel Sams were brilliant in their execution towards the conclusion of the tournament which gives some additional hope to the management.
However, ahead of anything, Mumbai Indians will have to undergo a process of player auction ahead of the IPL 2022. The franchise will retain most of its players and there will be a few names that will be removed from the team.
