India vs Afghanistan T20Is: Harshit Rana Ruled Out of Series and Asian Games 2026, Yash Thakur Gets Call-Up

India vs Afghanistan T20Is: Harshit Rana has been ruled out of India’s Afghanistan T20Is and Asian Games 2026 due to injury. Yash Thakur replaces him in both squads.

India vs Afghanistan T20Is: India have suffered a fresh setback ahead of their upcoming international assignments, with fast bowler Harshit Rana ruled out of both the T20I series against Afghanistan and the 2026 Asian Games due to injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Rana will not be available for either campaign after sustaining a strain during a match simulation.

Yash Thakur has been named as Rana’s replacement in both squads. The 27-year-old pacer recently made his India T20I debut during the team’s tour of Zimbabwe in July and impressed with four wickets in two matches.

Rana’s latest setback comes at an unfortunate time, as the fast bowler had been making steady progress in his recovery from a hamstring injury suffered during India’s tour of England. He was initially included in India’s squads for the Afghanistan T20Is and Asian Games, but his selection was subject to a final fitness clearance.

Harshit Rana Suffers Fresh Injury Blow

According to the BCCI, Rana sustained a strain while bowling during a match simulation on September 7. The setback has forced the selectors to make a late change to India’s plans for the upcoming assignments.

The fast bowler had been working his way back to full fitness after suffering a hamstring injury in England. His inclusion in the original squads suggested that the team management was satisfied with his recovery, but the latest strain has ruled him out of contention.

With India preparing for two important campaigns, the selectors have moved quickly to bring in Yash Thakur as a replacement. Thakur will now be part of both the Afghanistan T20I squad and the Indian contingent for the 2026 Asian Games.

The development also highlights the importance of maintaining adequate fast-bowling depth as India manage player workloads and fitness concerns ahead of a busy international schedule.

Yash Thakur Gets Another Opportunity

Yash Thakur’s inclusion provides the pacer with another chance to establish himself in India’s T20 setup. The 27-year-old earned his maiden India T20I appearance during the Zimbabwe tour in July.

He played two matches on that tour and picked up four wickets, giving the selectors a glimpse of his ability to contribute with the ball in the shortest format.

Thakur now faces a significantly bigger opportunity. Being selected for both the Afghanistan series and the Asian Games gives him the chance to work closely with India’s established players and strengthen his case for future international selection.

His addition also gives India another pace option alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh.

India’s Afghanistan T20I Squad

Shreyas Iyer will captain the Indian team in the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan. The squad contains a mixture of experienced international players and exciting young talent.

The updated India squad for the Afghanistan T20Is is:

Shreyas Iyer (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Yash Thakur.

The squad includes several players capable of changing a T20 match within a few overs. Abhishek Sharma provides an explosive option at the top of the order, while Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan add experience and flexibility in the batting department.

Youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is another player attracting significant attention. His presence alongside established names reflects India’s willingness to give promising young cricketers opportunities at the highest level.

At the other end of the experience spectrum, Jasprit Bumrah remains a major part of the bowling attack, provided he receives the required fitness clearance.

India’s Asian Games 2026 Squad

India will also enter the 2026 Asian Games with a strong squad. Shreyas Iyer has been named captain, while several players selected for the Afghanistan series will also be part of the Asian Games campaign.

The India squad for the 2026 Asian Games is:

Shreyas Iyer (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yash Thakur.

The squad has a balanced combination of batting depth, spin options and international-quality pace. The inclusion of players such as Bumrah and Arshdeep gives India considerable strength in the bowling department, while Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakaravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi provide multiple spin options.

Fitness Remains a Key Concern for India

Rana’s injury is not the only fitness-related issue India have been monitoring. When the original squads were announced, Rana, Bumrah, Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy were all selected subject to fitness clearance.

That situation underlines the challenges facing India as the team moves through a demanding period of international cricket.

Fast bowlers in particular require careful workload management, and Rana’s latest strain demonstrates how quickly a player's availability can change during the recovery process.

For India, the priority will now be ensuring that the remaining players enter the Afghanistan series and Asian Games fully fit while avoiding unnecessary risks.

What Harshit Rana’s Absence Means for India

Rana’s absence takes away one of India’s emerging pace options. His ability to generate pace and attack the opposition makes him a valuable prospect in the T20 format, but his latest injury means India will have to look elsewhere for those overs.

Thakur’s promotion is therefore more than a simple replacement. It is an opportunity for the young pacer to demonstrate that his performances in Zimbabwe were not a one-off.

With Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh also in the squad, Thakur is unlikely to carry the entire responsibility of the pace attack. However, his presence gives the team additional depth and another option if conditions or workload management require changes.

India Begins Another Important Phase

The Afghanistan T20Is and Asian Games 2026 represent important opportunities for India to build depth in their T20 squad. Several players are competing for regular places, while younger names are being given opportunities to prove themselves.

Harshit Rana’s injury is undoubtedly disappointing, particularly after his progress during rehabilitation. However, India have acted quickly by bringing Yash Thakur into both squads.

For Thakur, this could become a defining phase of his international career. After making his India debut in Zimbabwe and claiming four wickets in two matches, he now has an opportunity to make a stronger impression against Afghanistan and on the Asian Games stage.

India will hope the squad can remain injury-free from this point forward as preparations intensify. With experienced stars, established T20 performers and emerging youngsters all involved, the upcoming assignments could provide valuable clues about India’s plans and player combinations for the future.
