Are Mumbai Indians out of IPL 2026 after loss in CSK vs MI game?

Chennai Super Kings completed their second win over the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. They defeated their arch-rivals by eight wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday. After opting to bat, Mumbai struggled to go big and could post only 159 for seven, in response, Chennai chased the target in the 19th over.

Mumbai had a poor start to their innings as they lost Will Jacks in the second over for just one. However, Ryan Rickelton (37) and Naman Dhir (57) made up for early loss and racked up 58 runs for the second wicket, making the most of the powerplay.

Dhir carried on his good form and hit a brilliant half-century. Suryakumar Yadav (21) supported Dhir well but couldn’t carry on the start that he had. After the wicket of Dhir, Chennai made a strong comeback and restricted the run flow. Their bowlers did a decent job as they halted Mumbai at 159 for seven. 

Chennai had a shaky start to their chase with Sanju Samson falling early. However, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (67*) held one end up and slammed a terrific half-century. Urvil Patel (24) played a decent hand at three with Gaikwad, adding 49 runs for the second wicket.

Kartik Sharma, who came in as an impact player, came up with a brilliant knock as he ensured that he stayed there till the end along with Gaikwad. He played the situation well and hit his maiden half-century. He and Gaikwad stitched an unbeaten 94-run partnership and helped Chennai chase the target with eight wickets in hand.

Mumbai Indians are mathematically stil alive in IPL 2026; however, they have a very slim chance and their qualification now relies on the other teams. They first need to win all of their five games now. MI need all of the top four teams in PBKS, RCB, SRH and RR to to dominate the rest of the league, ensuring no more than four teams cross the 14-point mark. If they lose their game against LSG, they will be out of the league.
