Australia’s MCG to stage T20 World Cup 2022 Final, Confirmed!

T20 World Cup 2022 Final: In an exciting development from the field of cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC), on Tuesday, has confirmed that the final of the next ICC T20 World Cup will be played under the lights of Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on November 13.

The T20 World Cup 2020 was initially scheduled to take place Down Under, however, the challenges posed by the unprecedented rise in covid-19 cases all across the globe forced the officials to postpone the tournament for two years. ICC later confirmed that the tournament will be scheduled in 2022 in Australia.

Australia wins the recent ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and now they will look forward to defending their title in their own backyard. The Aussie gave a drubbing to the Kiwis in the final of T20 World Cup 2021 to win their first-ever T20 World Cup title.

The 2022 edition’s T20 World Cup is slated to take place from October 16 to November 13 next year. As many as 45 matches will be held in the tournament with 16 teams participating in the showpiece event.

The tournament is slated to be conducted across seven Australian cities including Brisbane, Geelong, Hobart, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

The final will be held in Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) while the two semi-finals will be played in Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) and Adelaide Oval.

It is noteworthy, that this is the first time Australia will be hosting the Men’s T20 World Cup. Prior to this, Cricket Australia (CA) hosted the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2020 which turned out to be a huge success. 

“With the unprecedented disruptions over the past two years, bringing the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to Australia for the first time offers a perfect opportunity for fans across the whole country to experience the joy of a live global sporting event again,” said Michelle Enright, the tournament’s CEO.

“The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2020 produced some incredible moments and created memories that will live with Australian cricket fans forever. Now it’s time for the men’s event to take centre stage and claim its own place in history.”
