ENGvsIND: Former Indian batsman Wasim Jaffer in his recent youtube video stated that opener Mayank Agarwal should be given a chance to perform if Shubman Gill misses out on the upcoming five matches <a href="https://www.icccricketschedule.com/ind-vs-nz-indias-last-home-test-series-against-new-zealand-full-squads-probable-playing-11-live-streaming-details-and-winner-prediction/" title="test series against" class="auto-internal-link" data-auto-link="1" data-link-type="suggestion" data-rule-id="0">test series against</a> England, starting August 4.



The BCCI earlier confirmed that the young cricketer triggered his persisting shin stress injury during the recent match between India and New Zealand. The BCCI official further resisted quoting whether Gill will be fit for the series or not.



Popularly known as India?s domestic legend, Jaffer said Gill?s injury will be a big opportunity for both Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul.



?It will be a great opportunity for both Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul with the former being my first preference. He has had an excellent career so far. He was dropped after two poor outings in Australia, but I am sure he will be looking forward to grabbing the opportunity,? said the 47 years old cricketer.



Agarwal plundered two double hundreds against South Africa in 2019 when Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal started opening together for India in tests. He surpassed the record of Don Bradman on the list of fastest to score two double centuries.



Jaffer also feels that KL Rahul will also get his chances to prove his mettle. He said that if not in the opening order, Rahul will fit in somewhere in the middle order.



?It is a very big series of five test matches which can make or break a cricketer's career. I feel KL Rahul can also fit somewhere in the middle order if not as an opener,? said Jaffer.

The young opener Gill failed to score runs in the ICC World Test Championship which to everyone's surprise was an eye raiser. Several experts suggested that the young lad should be pushed down to order instead of opening the innings.



With his recent low-grade performances, the trouble had already started to build and his leg injury will only compound it for the cricketer.



Wasim Jaffer also feels the same as he reckons Gill?s injury as a big setback for India and the cricketer himself.



?It will be a big blow for India as well as for Shubman Gill because as a youngster, you look forward to this kind of series to make a name for yourself. Considering that we judge a player by his overseas performance, it will be a setback for him to miss a couple of games.?

Former Indian cricketer and Punjab Kings (PBKS) batting coach Wasim Jaffer on Monday drew the ire of social media users after he took Twitter to sympathise with Pakistan Cricket post England Cricket Board?s (ECB?s) withdrawal <a href="https://www.icccricketschedule.com/citing-security-reasons-india-denies-travelling-to-pakistan-for-the-upcoming-champions-trophy-matches-are-to-be-shifted-to-dubai/" title="for the upcoming" class="auto-internal-link" data-auto-link="1" data-link-type="suggestion" data-rule-id="0">for the upcoming</a> Pakistan tour.



Jaffer, who has been, earlier, accused of backing Muslim cricketers during his stay as a coach in the Uttarakhand's cricket team, tweeted England?s decision as ?very disappointing.? He further said that England cricket owes so much to Cricket West Indies and Pakistan Cricket after the two latter teams toured England during the covid?s unprecedented times.



?The @TheRealPCB have every reason to be disappointed with the ECB. Pak and WI toured England last year during the pandemic before vaccines. England owes so much to both Pak and WI. Least ECB could do is not cancel the reciprocal tours. There are no winners when cricket is cancelled,? Jaffer tweeted.

It is noteworthy that Wasim Jaffer resigned from Uttrakhand?s cricket coach role after a fallout with the selector?s committee who accuse him to bring religious bias to break the team and prefer the Muslim cricketers.



Mahim Verma, former vice-president of the BCCI, said that Jaffer brought Iqbal Abdulla, Samad Salla and Jai Bista as guest players in the Uttarakhand team for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021. Jaffer further made Abdulla the skipper of the side and owing to his decisions Uttarakhand lost 4 out of its five matches in the SMAT 2021, accused Verma.

The cricket pundits looked disintegrated with Rohit Sharma, who led India in yet another misfired attempt to get the coveted ICC title. Since then, the discussion on who should be India's next test captain after Rohit Sharma has been on.



While some experts indicated reverting back to Virat Kohli, who relinquished his leadership position following India's test defeat against South Africa in 2021, some have given their varying opinions on who should be Team India's next test captain.



Notably, the ceremony of passing on of test baton from Rohit Sharma to someone other is not on BCCI's immediate plans. Speaking on the same lines, Wasim Jaffer reckons Ajinkya Rahane could potentially become a test captaincy candidate after incumbent Rohit Sharma for the Indian team should he manages to overcome his batting inconsistency. 



"Rahane will have to show consistency in his game, which has been his problem even though he has played 80-90 Tests (84)," said Wasim Jaffer while speaking on Jio Cinema on Friday. 



Jaffer believes Ajinkya Rahane has the ability to serve Indian test cricket for some years and could be India's next test captain after Rohit Sharma if he manages to survive his shocks of inconsistency.

"Consistency has been an issue, he will have to overcome it because India have a good captaincy option in him after Rohit Sharma is done. Rahane will have to make runs, and then everything else will follow," he added.



The <a href="https://www.icccricketschedule.com/ind-vs-aus-former-indian-great-backs-veteran-pacer-as-india-test-captain-for-the-entire-border-gavaskar-trophy-replacing-rohit-sharma-seeking-initial-absence/" title="former Indian" class="auto-internal-link" data-auto-link="1" data-link-type="suggestion" data-rule-id="0">former Indian</a> batter admitted that Ajinkya Rahane lost the battle with Rohit Sharma for the test captaincy due to his poor run of form back in February 2022. Had Rahane continued his sublime touch after he led India to a historic Border Gavaskar Trophy win in 2021, even with a depleted Indian side, there was no one who could have denied him the role.



"If his form was great from that Australia series after that 36 all-out, the way he led, scored a hundred in Melbourne? had his form remained the same, he would have been the next Test captain. But he lost his form and got dropped," he said.



The Indian batting stalwart lost his form post his exploits in the BGT 2021 and subsequently lost his place in India's test squad. He had to go back to the drawing board to figure out what went wrong for him to again resurrect his career in red-ball cricket. Rahane reinvented himself with a stint in the IPL 2022 and got back his position in the Indian <a href="https://www.icccricketschedule.com/ind-vs-aus-indian-skipper-for-the-first-test-jasprit-bumrah-hints-at-shamis-probable-inclusion-into-the-squad-for-the-border-gavaskar-trophy/" title="squad for the" class="auto-internal-link" data-auto-link="1" data-link-type="suggestion" data-rule-id="0">squad for the</a> ICC WTC 2023 Final in England.



"However, he reinvented himself in the IPL and got a chance in the WTC final. He was appointed the vice-captain as well, because the Indian selectors see a good leader in him. He still has age on his side but he needs to score runs, if he does not then he will find it difficult," he added.



It's important to note that Ajinkya Rahane made an impeccable test comeback during the marquee WTC FInal against Australia in the Oval. In fact, he was the only Indian batter who was hard to get rattled away with by the Aussie bowlers. In the two innings of the marquee WTC event, Rahane scored 89 and 46 runs respectively. However, his scores in the subsequent West Indies test series are discouraging.



The vice-captain of the Indian test team for the tour ongoing tour of West Indies scored three runs in the first IND vs WI test and then got dismissed at a score of eight in the ongoing second IND vs WI test.
