Shocking! After being guaranteed vice-captaincy, Shubman Gill now not in the first-choice players for the Asia Cup 2025

Shubman Gill, who is the test captain and the ODI vice-captain, however, may not find a place in the Indian T20I squad.

In what has been the latest development, as per the reports in RevSportz, it is learned that Shubman Gill is not in the first preference players for the Asia Cup 2025. This is because the selectors feel that pushing Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma down the order won't be fair.

The Asia Cup 2025 will be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9th to 28th. The Indian Cricket Team will open their campaign in the tournament on 10th September against the home team at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai.

For the last week, reports related to the Indian squad have been circulating very fast, with many claiming that Shubman Gill will be a sure-shot pick in the team. Also, it was reported that he would get a vice-captaincy of the team as he is seen as the future leader in all formats.

Shubman Gill, who is the test captain and the ODI vice-captain, however, may not find a place in the Indian T20I squad. This is because Gautam Gambhir and skipper Suryakumar Yadav believe in continuity, and they don't want to change the combination that has been working for them.

It wouldn’t be fair to push Sanju Samson down the order and accommodate Shubman Gill - Reports

A report in RevSportz claimed that both Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have done well as openers, and to accommodate Shubman Gill, team management isn't keen to change the openers. Even the middle-order is sorted, and hence Gill might find it difficult.

"Sources close to developments say that Sanju Samson has scored three hundreds in his last 10 T20Is and has done well as an opener. It wouldn’t be fair to push him down the order and accommodate Gill.

"Abhishek Sharma is the number-one-ranked T20 batter in the world, while Tilak Varma is the second-ranked batter. India, under Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav, has sought to give clarity and continuity to the players. In fact, even Gill had spoken about continuity in England in the red-ball format, and that’s what could now be a feature of Indian cricket going forward."

Shubman Gill has been sensational in T20 cricket, especially in the IPL. In the last three seasons, he has brought his best, scoring truckloads of runs. It remains to he seen if he gets selected in the Asia Cup 2025 or not.
