T20 World Cup 2021: Former Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni has decided not to take any honorarium for his services to the Indian team in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021, scheduled to begin on 17th October in UAE and Oman.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday revealed that Dhoni will not charge any payment for his service of mentorship to the Indian team, he said: “MS Dhoni is not charging any honorarium for his services as the mentor of the Indian team for the T20 World Cup.”
The celebrated finisher was declared to be the mentor of the Indian team during the announcement of a 15-men Indian contingent for the T20 World Cup by the BCCI secretary.
It is noteworthy that Dhoni has won three ICC titles during his stay at the Indian team as a skipper. The swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batsman won the inaugural season of the T20 World Cup in 2007. He further lifted the coveted ICC ODI World Cup title in 2011 following which the Indian team won Champions Trophy in 2013.
Jay Shah informed that the decision to bring MS Dhoni to the Indian team as a mentor was taken after consulting Virat Kohli (skipper), Rohit Sharma (vice-captain) and Ravi Shastri (head coach). He approached the CSK skipper while he was on his visit to Dubai for the regulation check of the IPL arrangements.
“I spoke to the captain and vice-captain, as well as Ravi Shastri. They all are on the same page, so that’s why this matter has reached this conclusion,” added Jay Shah.
“He was okay with my decision and agreed to be a Team Mentor of Team India for the T20 World Cup only. I am glad that MS (Dhoni) has accepted the BCCI’s offer and he is keen to contribute to the national team once again. MS will work closely with Ravi Shastri as well as other support staff to provide support and direction to Team India,” Shah had said.
The three times IPL winner captain, MS Dhoni, will pick up his national duty after he completes his IPL campaign. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is scheduled to play the final of the IPL 2021 with either Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) or Delhi Capitals (DC).
Team India will start its T20 World Cup run with a match against arch-rivals Pakistan on 24th October in Dubai International Stadium.
