Jonny Bairstow ruled out of IPL 2023; Matthew Short is announced as his replacement: Big Setback for Punjab Kings ahead of IPL 2023 as England’s famed batsman Jonny Bairstow will miss the entire IPL this season after his cricket board refused to grant him a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to participate in the high-profile T20 tournament, which begins on March 31. Matthew Short, a BigBash superstar, has been named as his replacement.

Following Jonny Bairstow’s return to training in late February, Kings, via the BCCI, had been awaiting news from the ECB regarding his precise fitness level. Bairstow began practicing batting this week in Yorkshire, and it’s anticipated that he’ll participate in Division 2 of the County Championship, which will take place in May. It is believed that the BCCI informed Kings to move forward with the replacement on Saturday.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), according to a report, denied providing Bairstow a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to participate in the IPL. Since suffering a leg injury in September of last year, Bairstow has not fully recovered.

Following a bizarre accident on the golf course in September 2022, Bairstow suffered many fractures and was forced to miss England’s T20 World Cup winning campaign as well as the following Test tours to Pakistan and New Zealand.

On the other hand, Short is a young uncapped cricketer from Australia who enjoys batting but can also offer some off-spin. In the most recent season of the Big Bash League (BBL), he was named Player of the Tournament. Short scored 458 runs with a 144.47 strike rate and ended second in the top run scorers tally.

Sharing the updates, the Head Coach of Punjab Kings, Trevor Bayliss, said “To all the fans of Punjab kings, I Have got some news. Unfortunately, Jonny Bairstow won’t be with us for this campaign. His injury hasn’t been recovered in time for this IPL, so we wish him a speedy recovery.”

“At the same time, we are announcing that Matthew Short, who was the player of the season in Australia this year, will be joining us for this IPL 2023,” he added.
