WPL 2024: Smriti Mandhana led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) secured a nail-biting two-run victory against Alyssa Healy’s UP Warriorz in the second game of the WPL 2024 at Bangalore’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, February 24th. After being put in to bat first by Healy, Bangalore lost their opener, Sophie Devine (1 run in five balls), in the first ball of the third over as Grace Harris (1-22) caught her plumb in front of the wickets. Tahlia Mcgrath (1-39) got the better of RCB Skipper Smriti Mandhana (13 runs in 11 balls), while Sophie Ecclestone dealt with the threat of Ellyse Perry (8 runs in 7 balls) as she sent Perry back to the pavilion on the last ball of the 8th over. The home team were struggling at 54-3 at the end of eight overs but then the duo of Richa Ghosh (62 runs in 37 balls) and Sabbhineni Meghana (53 runs in 44 balls) started the rescue act for the Bangalore based team as they duo added 71 runs for the fourth wicket, which propelled their side to 157-6 in 20 overs.

Talking about the bowling department of the UP Warriorz, Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2-24) took a brace of wickets while the trio of Sophie Ecclestone (1-26), Tahlia McGrath (1-39), and Deepti Sharma (1-23) picked up one wicket each.

In reply to RCB’s 157 runs, the UP Warriors were able to score just 155 runs in 20 overs at the loss of seven wickets as they fell short of the target of 158 runs by two runs. Shweta Sehrawat (31 runs in 25 balls) and Grace Harris (38 runs in 23 balls) were the top scorers for the UP based team.

Leg Spinner Sobhana Asha (5-22) destroyed the batting unit of the UP Warriorz with her brilliant fifer, as her exceptional bowling performance allowed RCB to turn the match in their favour. Sophie Molineux (1-36) and Georgia Wareham (1-23) took a wicket each.

Delhi Capitals young English batter Alice Capsey continues to be the leading run getter in the current edition of the WPL with 75 runs. RCB’s Richa Ghosh has replaced Mumbai’s Yastika Bhatia at the second position with 62 runs. Yastika Bhatia has dropped down to the third place from second with 57 runs next to her name. 

MI Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur has fallen down to the fourth spot from the third spot with 55 runs. RCB batter Sabbhineni Meghana (53 runs) has occupied the fifth position while the sixth and the seventh places are occupied by Jemimah Rodrigues (42 runs) and Grace Harris (38 runs) respectively.

Delhi Capitals skipper Meg Lanning (31 runs) is still in the eighth position, while Shweta Sehrawat (31 runs) has propelled to the ninth position. Amelia Kerr has fallen to 10th place from sixth, with 24 runs next to her name.

RCB’s leg spinner Sobhana Asha is currently the leading wicket taker of WPL 2024 with five scalps thanks to her fifer against the UP Warriorz. Alice Capsey has fallen to the second position with two wickets at an average of 11.5, while Rajeshwari Gayakwad (two wickets) is at number three with an average of 12.

Arundhati Reddy dropped to fourth place from the second spot with two wickets as well, at an average of 13.5. MI’s Nat Sciver Brunt (two wickets) and Amelia Kerr (two scalps) have slipped to the fifth and sixth positions with averages of 16.5 and 21.5, respectively.
