World Cup 2023 Points Table Updated: Three wins in a row for Afghanistan as they aim for a seat in the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup 2023 semi-finals. In the recent contest, Afghanistan hammered the Netherlands by seven wickets to further strengthen their possibilities for the top-four finish. The win propelled Afghanistan to move past Pakistan in the World Cup 2023 Points Table, which was updated after the Afghanistan vs Netherlands game in Lucknow.

As the contest began in Lucknow, Afghanistan opened its all-spin attack to dismantle the Dutch batting lineup. There was no match for Afghanistan’s spin-bowling, featuring Noor Ahmed, Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb ur Rahman, as we saw the Netherlands crumble at a paltry total of 179 in 46.3 overs.

Sybrand Engelbrecht was the top scorer for the Netherlands with the knock of 58 runs in 86 deliveries followed by opener Max O’Dowd, who played a 40-ball 42 run innings. The Netherlands could only put up 179 runs before getting bowled out.

For Afghanistan, veteran spinner Mohammad Nabi scalped three wickets while Noor Ahmed and Mujeeb ur Rahman scalped two and one wickets respectively.

The scoreboard pressure never existed for Afghanistan owing to the meagre total put up by the Netherlands. Afghanistan, though, lost their two wickets early on, the other incoming batters were firm in their resolve to take their side home. The likes of Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi scored their half-centuries while Azmatullah Omarzai assisted with an unbeaten 31-run knock to win the game.

Afghanistan chased the 179 run total in just 31.3 overs and won the contest by seven wickets.

AFG vs NED: Afghanistan Qualification Scenarios for Semi-Finals World Cup 2023

Afghanistan’s seven-wicket win against the Netherlands has come at the right time. After chasing down the total piled up by the Netherlands in just 31.1 overs, Afghanistan has improved their Net Run Rate to some extent, though, it’s still far from being called a good Net Run Rate.

As of now, Afghanistan is placed at the fifth spot in the ICC World Cup 2023 Points Table with four wins and eight points after playing seven fixtures. They are now at par with Pakistan and other bottom teams in the tournament, which gives them an edge to progress ahead in the World Cup 2023.

It would be in Afghanistan’s favour to ideally win both of its remaining games in the World Cup 2023 or at least win one of the remaining two fixtures. The next two wins will put them at 12 points and if one of New Zealand and Australia remains at 10, then the Afghans will take a seamless entry to the World Cup 2023 Semi-Finals.

If they win just one fixture, of the remaining two, then it will bring them down to 10 points and the net run rate will come into play. Their chances of winning with the net run rate are quite slim as the current top four teams have a positive net run rate while Afghanistan’s net run rate stands at -0.330.

Even at eight points, Afghanistan will have the chance of making it to the semi-finals of the World Cup 2023, provided that one of New Zealand and Australia remains at the eight points and the net run rate will again come into play.
