WPL 2023: Women’s cricket in India, or we should say in the entire world, took a giant leap following the announcement of the Women’s IPL by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) a couple of months ago. While the debates and discussions to introduce a full-fledged Women’s IPL were on the tables for a very long time, every bit of it has finally begun to fall into place as we are set to witness the first season of the Women’s IPL from March 4 to 26.
The Women’s IPL, which is officially called the Women’s Premier League (WPL), saw its auction on February 13, 2023, in Mumbai. Five teams took part in the auction process for which 409 players from all around the world had registered.
Similar to the Men’s IPL auction, the Women’s IPL auction had a few nervy moments. India’s batting stalwart Smriti Mandhana became the highest earner from the maiden Women’s IPL auction with a handsome paycheck of INR 3.4 Crores from Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
The first edition of the Women’s IPL will be held in Mumbai itself. To tackle the logistics and travel issues in the first season, the BCCI has zeroed in on conducting the entire season in one city.

Women’s WPL IPL 2023 Venues
All 22 matches in the inaugural season of the Women’s IPL will be held in two venues in Mumbai – DY Patil Stadium and Brabourne CCI. While the DY Patil Stadium will host the opening fixture of the luxurious league between Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians, the Brabourne CCI will host the final of the Women’s IPL 2023.
