Updated IPL 2024 Points Table after PBKS vs DC [PBKS won by 4 Wickets]
PBKS vs DC

In what proved to be a really exciting and entertaining fixture of IPL 2024, the second match of the 17th season of the Indian Premier League took place between the Punjab Kings and the Delhi Capitals. It was a Northern Derby between both teams, and the newly built Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur played host to the match between the Northern rivals.

This was the first IPL match that took place at this stadium, and PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan won the toss and chose the safe option of bowling first. The Aussie duo of David Warner (29 runs in 21 balls) and Mitchell Marsh (20 runs in 12 balls) opened the innings for the Capitals, and they got the visitors off to a really good start as they stitched an opening partnership of 39 runs in 20 balls.

But Punjab seamer Arshdeep Singh stopped the assault of the Aussie duo as he dismissed Mitchell Marsh in the third over of the Delhi inning. Punjab Kings new signing Harshal Patel made an instant impact, as well as dismissing Delhi’s former skipper Warner in the eight over, which left the visitors at 74-2. After the dismissal of David Warner, the Punjab Kings bowling unit initiated a middle-order collapse of the Delhi Capitals. The trip of Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, and Harpreet Brar chipped in with one wicket each as the entire middle order of the Capitals was sent back to the Pavillion by the end of the 16 over, despite a retaliation shown by Shai Hope (33 runs in 25 balls) and skipper Rishabh Pant (18 runs in 13 balls).

The Delhi Capitals were struggling at 138-6 at the end of the 17th over, and the DC dugout took a bold call as they introduced Abhishek Porel as the impact substitute in the 18th over, a decision that paid off pretty well as the 21 year old made a huge impact with the bat with his aggressive cameo of 32 runs in 10 deliveries at a strike rate of 320.00. Porel’s fighting knock propelled the visitors to a respectable total of 174 runs in 20 overs.

Arshdeep Singh (2-28) was the best bowler for the Punjab Kings, and Harshal Patel made a good impact with his figures of 2-47. The trio of Rabada (1-36), Brar (1-14), and Chahar (1-33) took one wicket each.

Talking about the batting inning of the hosts, skipper Shikhar Dhawan (22 runs in 16 balls) came to open the innings with Jonny Bairstow (9 runs in 3 balls), and they got involved in an opening partnership of 34 runs in 19 deliveries before veteran seamer Ishant Sharma got the breakthrough as he dismissed Dhawan in the fourth over and played a big part in the run out of Bairstow as well.

Impact players Prabhsimran Singh (26 runs in 17 balls) and Sam Curran steadied the ship of the hosts as they stitched a partnership of 42 runs for the third wicket, but the partnership came to an end in the tenth over as the former was sent back to the pavilion by Kuldeep Yadav. Jitesh Sharma (9 runs in 9 balls) got dismissed cheaply by Kuldeep, and his dismissal left the hosts at 100-4 in 11.3 overs.
