This unique record attained by Rohit Sharma as captain in ICC Limited-overs events leaves behind Indian greats like Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni
Limited-overs cricket has been a part of the sport for almost a decade now, and Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, has claimed a unique feat in the history of the game. He is currently named the skipper with the most wins in limited-overs ICC tournament matches.
Sharma in recent times was named the Indian skipper for the 2022 T20 World Cup for the first time after Virat Kohli stepped down from the role of India’s white-ball skipper. This drastic decision was taken based on the fact that India made their first group-stage exit from an ICC event after a decade in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
Ever since Rohit Sharma stepped in as the ODI skipper, it also marked his return to commanding form with the bat, and the Men in Blue turned into an invincible team in the format.
List of ICC tournaments India played under Rohit Sharma:
2022 T20 World Cup
Rohit Sharma for the first time led India to an ICC event; before this, Rohit as an Indian skipper only had an Asia Cup title under his belt. The T20 World Cup marked a huge comeback for the Men in Blue after their humiliating exit from the group stage of the 2021 T20 World Cup. Rohit led the Indian side to the semi-final before losing to England.
2023 World Test Championship Final
India reached their second consecutive final in the World Test Championship, and Rohit Sharma was the man leading the nation this time in whites. Having played the iconic final against Pat Cummins Australia, India was beaten in a humiliating fashion as Travis Head was coined the player of the match.
2023 ODI Cricket World Cup
Next Rohit Sharma led India India this time in another different format; despite winning bilaterals throughout all formats, he kept losing in the knockouts of ICC events. However, India's home campaign in the CWC went too well, as India was undefeated in all their group-stage games as well as the semi-finals.
However, once again Rohit Sharma could not secure the trophy as they eventually lost the final to an Australian side led by Pat Cummins. This was only the third ICC event loss for India under skipper Rohit.
2024 T20 World Cup
Finally, India found what it desired for so long, and again, none other than Rohit Sharma made history for India. India triumphed in the T20 World Cup, which broke their trophy drought after 11 years and a drought in the T20 World Cup after 17 years. India lifted the cup under Rohit Sharma as he became the fourth Indian skipper to have won an ICC trophy.
2025 ICC Champions Trophy
India is currently in Dubai playing in the much anticipated Champions Trophy in 2025, which is being hosted by Pakistan. They have already started their campaign with two wins, both against neighbouring arch-rivals Bangladesh and Pakistan. They will continue their tournament against New Zealand.
