SLC ropes in Mahela Jayawardene as Sri Lanka consultant for T20 World Cup 2021.

T20 World Cup 2021: The Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) has roped in former batting legend Mahela Jayawardene as the national side’s batting consultant for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021 scheduled to be held in the middle east.

The showpiece event is slated to commence two days after the completion of the Vivo Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 in the UAE and Oman.

The development for SLC came knowing Jayawardene’s outstanding experience with T20 side Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL. The former Sri Lankan has helped MI win multiple T20 cups in the Indian T20 tournament.

Moreover, Jayawardene will be aware of the conditions in the UAE due to his outing with IPL franchise Mumbai Indians. He will provide his valuable inputs to the national side.

Mahela Jayawardene’s role for Sri Lankan national senior cricket team will be last just a week between 16-23 October, however, he will be a key man for building Sri Lanka’s U-19 team for the ICC U-19 World Cup in West Indies.

“We are very happy to welcome Mahela into his new roles, as his presence with the Sri Lanka Team and the U19 Team is going to help the players immensely,” said Sri Lankan Cricket Board CEO Ashley De Silva in a statement.

“From his playing days, Mahela was respected for the vast cricketing knowledge he brought into the game, first as a player, then as a Captain, now as a Coach for different teams.”

Sri Lanka will play the qualifiers of the T20 World Cup 2021 in Oman before playing in the Super 12s with the top eight ranked ICC T20I sides. The team will begin the World Cup campaign against Namibia on 18th October in Abu Dhabi.
