However, Virat and Rohit are part of the squad, but Shubman Gill replaces Rohit Sharma as the captain of the India National Cricket Team in ODIs without having any proper specific reasons.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have announced their retirement from T20I cricket in 2024 after winning the T20 World Cup 2024, and they announced their test retirement in 2025. Fans' last hope was that they will see both the legends in the ODI cricket and the ODI World Cup 2027, but after Rohit Sharma has been sacked from ODI captaincy, things aren’t looking good.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have both been named in India’s ODI Squad for the Australia series, which is set to start from October 19, 2025. The chief selector Ajit Agarkar, speaking after the squad announcement but did not confirm if this is the last tour of Rohit and Virat.
“We picked them for Australia because of their skill and experience. As far as the 2027 World Cup goes, we don’t need to talk about it today. They just need to do what they have always done- keep scoring runs. Their future will depend on their current performance and hunger for the game.”
He also clarified that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are “non-committal about the 2027 World Cup.” The Decision about their participation will not be taken right now. It will depend on their performance, fitness, and form as ODIs for India become less frequent in the next cycle.
