BCCI to Remove Rohit From Captaincy? Big Decision Looming Ahead of India’s Next Series
The Future of Indian Cricket’s leadership is once again in the spotlight after reports claimed that the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is rethinking the ODI captaincy as Team India prepares for a high-stakes white-ball series against Australia. Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are expected to make their comeback in the ODI squad for the Australia tour.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have already retired from T20I cricket and Test cricket, respectively, in 2024 and 2025. Fans are early waiting to see them in the ODI cricket, and they are expected to be part of the Squad in the ODI series against Australia. However, no official statement has been released by BCCI on their comeback, but reports suggest they will be part of the squad.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to come into action again.
Rohit and Kohli have both passed the fitness test and are expected to return to the squad after a decent break post the champions trophy. Both were last seen in action in international cricket for the Indian Team in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, where the Indian Team played dominating cricket and lifted the trophy after winning against New Zealand by 4 wickets.
After winning the T20 World Cup 2024, Both players retired from T20I cricket and then, they retired from Test cricket after such a long career despite being in good form. Rohit announced his test retirement on May 07, 2025, whereas Virat Kohli announced his retirement after a few days, on May 12, 2025.
BCCI to Remove Rohit From Captaincy?
Many reports are claiming this, but as per the latest report from PTI, BCCI has no intention to sack Rohit Sharma from ODI captaincy, as the team is performing exceptionally under his leadership. As of now, BCCI is more focused on the T20 World Cup 2026 and the new ICC WTC 2025-27 cycle, so they are not concerned about Rohit’s captaincy.
PTI added, “There is also no reason to remove Rohit from the leadership role as he has hardly had a failure in this unless he himself wants to concentrate on his batting.”
So, Rohit Sharma is expected to remain India's ODI Captain for the forthcoming three-match series against Australia, which is set to start from October 19 in Perth. However, BCCI sources confirm that the leadership succession will be a key focus before the next ICC World Cup cycle, but it all depends on this season’s performance.
“The priority at the moment rests with the T20 World Cup early next year at home and gaining the maximum WTC Points from the four home tests in 2025,” the report added.
