Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli’s form crucial for their World Cup 2024 selection: Gautam Gambhir: Just six months are left for the next World Cup and the hottest question among the pundits and fans is whether or not the experienced duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be able to make the final cut in the T20 World Cup 2024 Squad. There is a lot of confusion among the fraternity over the participation of the two aforementioned players in the upcoming marquee event.

Things became complicated with reports emerging that the Indian selection panel is looking to replace Virat Kohli with Ishan Kishan at the number three position in India’s T20I playing11.

Interestingly, everything thought that though Virat Kohli’s place is not confirmed in the Indian T20I squad, Rohit Sharma will have an easy time making it to the final. However, things took a U-turn when BCCI secretary Jay Shah, recently, continued the ambiguity over Rohit Sharma’s presence in the T20I squad. He said the board is in no haste to take decisions on Rohit Sharma’s participation in the marquee event, scheduled to be held in the West Indies and the USA.

Keeping all the discussions aside, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir reckons the two players must be in the T20I squad if they have the relevant form. He asserted that the player’s form should dictate their selection process in the Indian T20I Squad travelling for the T20 World Cup 2024.

“See, it all depends on the form,” said Gautam Gambhir as quoted by Cricket Times. “Ultimately, it’s the form. The good thing is it’s happening after the IPL. 100 per cent. They should be part of the World Cup if they are in good form. For me, form is important. For a T20 World Cup, you want to take players who are in really good form. If Rohit and Virat are in good form, they should absolutely be picked for the World Cup.”

The T20 World Cup 2024 is marked to be held in June 2024. The event will be preceded by the Indian Premier League (IPL) which will serve as the selection process for the players looking to seal their places in the Indian T20I squad.

One-off game doesn’t make Rohit Sharma a bad captain: Gautam Gambhir

Further, the 2011 World Cup-winning player mentioned that Team India played really good cricket throughout the ODI World Cup 2023 and an off game doesn’t make it a bad team. Neither Rohit Sharma becomes a bad captain just because of one loss in the event.

“Rohit has done a very, very good job. It’s not easy to win 5 IPL trophies. And then the way India dominated in the last 50-over World Cup… One bad game doesn’t make Rohit Sharma or this team a bad team and the way they dominated… I can still understand if you win tight games, the way they played… it’s not fair to say Rohit is a bad captain after just one bad game,” Gambhir said.

The Indian side left shocks in the final of the World Cup 2023 after they were thrashed by the Aussies at the Narendra Modi Stadium. India played fantastic cricket leading up to the final of the event but succumbed in the final when it mattered the most.
