Revealed- Why Asia Cup 2025 will be played in a T20I format ?

The Asia Cup 2025 is less than a month away from now. The tournament is all set to begin on 9th September, with the final scheduled to take place on 28th September. It will be played in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the T20I format. 

The Asia Cup 2025 will see eight teams taking part it. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, UAE, Oman and Hong Kong will be there, fighting for the Asian Championship of Asia. 

The Asia Cup has been one of the oldest cricketing tournaments in the world, with its first edition being played in 1984. The Asia Cup 2025 will be the 17th edition of the tournament and will help prepare teams for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which will be played in January-February next year. 

Why the Asia Cup 2025 will be played in a T20I format 

With the Asia Cup 2025 around the corner, there has been a common question among the fans as to why the tournament will be played in T20I format. The reason behind that has been the decision that the Asian Cricket Council took in 2015. 

Since the inception of the Asia Cup, the tournament has been played in the ODI format. But ahead of the 2016 edition, it was decided that the format of the tournament would depend on the basis of the format of upcoming world events. 

Hence, 2016 was the first time that the Asia Cup was played in T20I format. This is because the ICC T20 World Cup 2016 was around the corner, and following that, all the events were played in accordance with the world events. 

Therefore, the Asia Cup 2025 will be played in the T20I format as the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is around the corner. Notably, the 2023 edition of the tournament was played in the ODI format as the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 was around the corner.
