The India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 Final was always expected to create headlines, both on and off the field. India lifted the trophy after a stunning win against Pakistan, but instead of celebrations being the only talking point. A controversy erupted, but this time between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

The Controversy began after PM Modi’s social media post over warm wishes to India’s victory in the Asia Cup, referring to “OP Sindoor”, which led to a strong reaction from Naqvi. In response, the PCB Chief or Pakistan Minister said, “Dragging war into sports only exposes…”, turning the cricket rivalry into a political debate.

PM Modi’s “Operation Sindoor” tweet

After India’s thrilling win against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 Final, PM Modi congratulated the India National Cricket Team with a tweet and linked the historic cricket win to a recent military operation.

“Operation Sindoor on the games field”.

Mohsin Naqvi’s Strong Response:

PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi reacted to the tweet of PM Modi, giving a strong statement on social media.

He said, “Dragging war into sport only exposes the mindset. Cricket is a game of skill and spirit, not a battlefield. We should celebrate players, not bring politics of war into the sport.”

Naqvi ‘s statement directly pointed at PM Modi’s tweet, accusing it of fueling unnecessary tension between the two countries. All this reaction is just using sports for its political benefits.

Operation Sindoor is the name of India’s tri-service military operation launched in May 2025 after the brutal Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 innocent civilians. The operation targeted terror infrastructure inside Pakistan.

The aggression came from the Indian side after many of Pakistan's cricketers didn’t come in support of those victims during the Pahalgam incident; they supported those who were convicted of the attack. Those gestures by Pakistani cricketers during the match show what they feel about these incidents.

Things started with No Handshake and now, it went to taking away the trophy from the winning team. The political debate will always be there if an India vs Pakistan match is happening at any stage. However, this time things have escalated quite more and it will impact the sport in the future if things are not handled carefully.
