Vivo IPL 2021: Defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma has been fined INR 12 Lakhs post the Delhi-Mumbai match for maintaining a slow over-rate.

The game on Tuesday was won by Rishabh Pant’s Delhi Capitals (DC) as they chased down the given total in 19.1 overs with six wickets in hand.

“Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their IPL 2021 match against Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on April 20,” the IPL said in a statement.

“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to a minimum over-rate offences, Mr Sharma was fined Rs 12 lakh,” the statement added.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) before the start of the IPL 2021 made some tweaks to the IPL Code of Conduct (CoC). The rule of minimum over rate was changed. According to the new rules, each IPL innings has to be finished before or by the 90th minute.

Earlier, the 20th over of the innings was not included in the time frame of 90 minutes. The rule stated that the 20th over should begin before or by the 90th minute.

According to the BCCI, multiple such offences could even lead to the suspension of the skipper for one or multiple games according to the type of offence.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni was also fined INR 12 Lakhs for maintaining a slow over-rate in the second game of IPL against Delhi Capitals (DC).
