A fresh rivalry has brewed in the Tata IPL as Gujarat Titans square off against Mumbai Indians and it's been an interesting one. Unlike many other rivalries, which begin on the cricket field, the GT vs MI began on paper during the auction days. Hardik Pandya, who had led GT to the title win in 2022 and another IPL final outing in 2023, left the Ahmedabad-based franchise and joined Mumbai Indians (MI), his former side after the latter struck an insane deal ahead of the IPL 2024 auctions.
The addition of Hardik Pandya has bolstered Mumbai Indians' setup significantly. Interestingly, Hardik Pandya has also replaced five times IPL winning captain Rohit Sharma from the leadership position in the side.
MI, under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, did well last year, although, they were tattered to some extent by the injury concerns. MI managed to reach playoffs and did well to defeat LSG in the eliminator as well. However, it was Gujarat, who defeated them in the second qualifier.
Similar to Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans (GT) will also be with their new captain this season. Young batter Shubman Gill has been raised to the helm and it remains to be seen how he performs with the added leadership responsibilities.
GT finished atop the IPL 2023 points table at the end of the league stage. They were, arguably, the team to beat in the season. However, as fate had written, GT couldn't cross the final obstacle and lost to CSK in the IPL 2023 final.

Mohammad Shami, one of GT's crucial cogs in the bowling lineup, is already ruled out of the Tata IPL 2024. Besides, Matthew Wade will also miss a couple of games for GT due to his commitments in the Sheffield Shield Final. Robin Minz, Gujarat's INR 3.8 Crore buy, has also been ruled out of the tournament.
Mumbai Indians, too, have a couple of injury blows. Jason Behrendorff and Dilshan Madushanka have been ruled out of the Tata IPL 2024 due to their respective injuries. The biggest concern for the team would be the availability of Suryakumar Yadav. The batter has not been declared fit by NCA as of now.
