The big news is that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will play white-ball cricket after seven months. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah is rested for this tour due to workload management. But Gill replaces Rohit as the new ODI captain to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
After months away from International cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are back in the spotlight. Both retired from T20I earlier in 2024 after winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, and they also retired from test cricket to focus on limited-overs format, specifically ODI cricket.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have officially been named in India’s 15-member ODI squad for the three-match test series in Australia. These two legends, who recently retired from test and T20I cricket, now focus exclusively on ODIs. Both played exceptional cricket in their last appearance for the Indian team. Rohit’s match-winning knock in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand.
Virat Kohli smashed a century against Pakistan and also had an exceptional performance in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy. Both players have been in good form, and they also passed the BCCI’s fitness test, so they are ready to roar again in International Cricket.
Rohit and Virat’s addition will not only increase experience and depth but also the confidence in the team against world-class teams like Australia, who have a superb pace-attack. Australia will give tough competition to the Indian Team, and experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will give the team a lot of confidence.

Shubman Gill, who has been captaining India in Tests, will now be leading the Indian Team in ODI cricket as well. The Selectors feel he needs to be groomed before the upcoming 2027 World Cup so that he can manage the teams perfectly in the absence of ROKO. Currently, the Indian team is playing a two-match test series against the West Indies on their home soil.
Jasprit Bumrah is also rested for this tour; he has been dealing with fitness issues in recent times. Team management handling his workload carefully and skipping gives him time to recover fully for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which is expected to play in Feb-March next year.
