Big Blow for India! Washington Sundar ruled out of the IND vs NZ T20Is, doubtful for T20 World Cup 2026 (PC: BCCI)

The Indian Cricket Team have faced a massive blow ahead of the T20I series against New Zealand and the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. In what has been the latest development, as per the reports in Sports Tak, it is learned that Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the upcoming two events.

Washington Sundar faced a rib injury during the first ODI against New Zealand in Vadodara. After bowling just five overs in the series opener, the all-rounder walked back to the pavilion and didn’t return to the field or bowl, which was the first sign of his injury.

Washington Sundar then came out to bat later in the innings, but he struggled with his injury and wasn’t able to run. After the match, he went for scans, which revealed a rib injury and he was ruled out of the remaining two ODIs against New Zealand.

In his place, the BCCI added Ayush Badoni as his replacement, but it was expected that he would be back in the T20Is. However, that isn’t the case as India have suffered a big blow ahead of the major T20 World Cup 2026.

Washington Sundar to report to BCCI’s CoE

The reports claimed that Washington Sundar will head to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence to begin his recovery. There are chances that he might miss the T20 World Cup 2026 as well, if things don’t look good for him, and also the tournament is around the corner as well.

Sundar has been one of the best all-rounders for India in the T20Is. He has bagged 20 wickets in 16 innings at an average of 13.05 and an economy rate of 6.16 in the format. Also, he had been handy with the bat, with his recent performance being a match-winning 49* off 23 balls in Australia

If Sundar is ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2026, this will act as a major blow. India are also mulling over the fitness of Tilak Varma, who also has also been ruled out of the first three T20Is against New Zealand due to lower abdominal injury.

If he gets ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2026, BCCI would be having a keen eye on replacements.
