WPL 2023: Laura Wolvaardt to replace Beth Mooney in the Gujarat Giants squad: As rumors suggested, Gujarat Giants Captain and Aussie sensation Beth Mooney be ruled out of the ongoing WPL 2023 and South African superstar Laura Wolvaardt is all set to replace her in the squad for WPL 2023. Laura got fifty runs in her maiden game while participating in the PSL Women’s Exhibition matches.
The Proteas opener Laura was the standout performer for the nation in the Women’s World Cup 2023 which was hosted by South Africa. She scored 267 runs in 6 matches of the recently concluded World Cup. She will definitely add depth to the skillsets of Gujarat Giants with her experience.
Mooney, the Giants’ official captain, hurt his knee against the Mumbai Indians in the first game of the tournament. Giants were chasing Mumbai’s 207 when Mooney injure her knee in the first over of the chase while stopping and turning around while attempting to sneak a run.
She immediately left the crease due to injury, and the Giants lost by a massive difference of 143 runs after being bowled out for 64. Mooney hasn’t played since, but she has been observed at following Giants games with her teammates.
Mooney, a rising captain for the first time, was picked in a side with numerous Australian players at the WPL auction last month for INR 2 crore (about US$ 244,000). Ashleigh Gardner, Georgia Wareham, and Annabel Sutherland are also part of the Gujarat squad.
Mooney was primarily expected to lead the Giants’ batting lineup in the WPL after scoring 74 runs in 53 balls to help Australia defeat South Africa in the T20 World Cup final. Wolvaardt, who went unsold during the player auction, may now be needed in this position.
