Why was Shreyas Iyer not picked in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday (19th August) announced the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025. The tournament will begin on 9th September, and the final is scheduled to be played on 28th September. 

The Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025   saw some of the big names missing out. One of the big players that wasn't picked was Shreyas Iyer, who was expected to be there in the team as he has been playing a great role with the bat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Mumbai for the domestic circuit. 

There were some reports as well, which claimed that Shreyas Iyer will be there in the Asia Cup 2025, as he has been doing a decent job for the team. However, that wasn't the case as BCCI didn't pick him and went ahead with the youngsters. 

Shreyas Iyer's best came in the IPL 2025 when he played for the Punjab Kings in the league. The batter slammed 604 runs in the league and took his team to the final. Based on this, he was expected to be picked for the team. 

He'll have to wait for his chance - Ajit Agarkar on Shreyas Iyer

As the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025 was announced, Ajit Agarkar was asked why Shreyas Iyer wasn't picked in the squad. Replying to this, he said that there wasn't any place in the team, and they couldn't do anything about it. 

"With regards to Shreyas, I mean, you need to tell him who he can replace. No fault of his, nor is it ours. It's just that we have to pick 15 at the moment, he'll have to wait for his chance," said Ajit Agarkar. 

The Indian squad will be captained by Suryakumar Yadav, while Shubman Gill will be the vice-captain. It remains to be seen how they will fare in the tournament.
