Suryakumar Yadav is a sensation that hit Indian cricket in 2020. He has revolutionized the way the Indian middle-order plays. The all-out attack approach played by England, which India is trying to adapt can certainly suit Surya. Surya has played domestic cricket since 2010 and has a hell lot of experience. So, why did it take so long for Surya to make it to the national team? What went wrong? Here is an in-depth look at the career of this elite batter:

Suryakumar Yadav Played for Mumbai in 2010:

The first time Surya played for the Mumbai Ranji team was in 2010. He played under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. In his debut game for Mumbai, he got to bat alongside Rohit. The influence of Rohit Sharma on Surya’s career is immense. From then on SKY was the top player for Mumbai. He was also picked by the Mumbai Indians in 2013. After not getting any significant chances, he was drafted to the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Surya’s stint at KKR was good. He was given significant opportunities. But the sad part was that he was asked to bat down the order. It was here that Surya showed signs of being a 360-degree player. He was scooping the international bowlers for fun. But Gautam Gambhir was the one who noticed the fire and spirit in this young lad. Things were not effectively working for Surya as other batchmates of his had already gone to play for India. He was a member of the first U-23 team formed for shadow tours. He belongs to the batch of Axar Patel and KL Rahul.

Mumbai Indians picked Suryakumar Yadav in the 2018 mega auction. In this auction the Mumbai Indians formed their core team. They bought players like Ishan Kishan, Krunal Pandya, and Hardik Pandya. Surya was made to pen in the first game of the season. He was given the position, he loved. Before this season he was playing in the Mumbai T20 league. He played an elite inning of 95 runs in the final to win it for his team.

From then on, season after season in the IPL Surya was getting the big and important runs. He scored 450+ impactful runs in 3 consecutive seasons. He also captained the Mumbai Ranji team in 2018, 2019, and 2020 seasons. Surya was doing everything in his capacity.

In an MI TV episode (the Mumbai Indians insider show) in 2020, Rohit Sharma also said, “Keep working the same way, the India cap is not far away.” And in 2021, Surya got his maiden call-up for the Indian national team.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Wife and her Impact:

SKY regards the presence of his better half as an important part of his life. He even says that she has got the Indian Blue Jersey for me. He recalls an incident from 2013, where she made him realize that he was playing decently well but why wasn’t he playing for the national team. He specifically recalls this moment as an eye-opener.

Suryakumar Yadav has recently risen to number 5 in the ICC T20 Batter’s ranking. This makes him the highest-ranked Indian batter on this list. He is also regarded as the Indian Michael Hussey, a player who made his debut at the age of 30 and still has a lot to offer to the team and world cricket.
