KL Rahul is emerging as the frontrunner to replace Axar Patel as Delhi Capitals captain in IPL 2027. Rishabh Pant could return to DC, while Kuldeep Yadav may join Lucknow Super Giants.

Delhi Capitals Eye Leadership Change After Back-to-Back Disappointments Under Axar Patel: Delhi Capitals could be heading for a major overhaul ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, with star India wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul emerging as the frontrunner to take over the captaincy from Axar Patel.

The move comes after the franchise endured two disappointing campaigns under Axar's leadership, failing to qualify for the playoffs in both IPL 2025 and IPL 2026.

According to a report published by The Times of India on Friday (June 19), Delhi Capitals are seriously considering handing the captaincy reins to Rahul, who has extensive leadership experience in the tournament. While no final decision has been announced, the Karnataka batter is understood to be a strong contender for the role.

The possible appointment would mark KL Rahul's return to captaincy after previously leading Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants. Meanwhile, the franchise is also reportedly preparing for a dramatic reunion with former captain Rishabh Pant, while left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav could be on his way to the Lucknow Super Giants.

KL Rahul Emerges as Favourite for Delhi Capitals Captaincy

Delhi Capitals invested heavily in building a competitive squad over the last two seasons, but the desired results never materialized. Despite possessing several match-winners, the franchise missed the playoffs in successive campaigns under Axar Patel, forcing the management to rethink its leadership strategy.

According to available information, "Rahul is emerging as a strong candidate for the Delhi Capitals captaincy, but no decision has been made so far."

If appointed, Rahul would become Delhi Capitals' new leader for IPL 2027 and bring valuable experience to a side desperate to end its title drought.

The 34-year-old has previously captained two IPL franchises and established himself as one of the most consistent performers in the league. His calm approach, tactical awareness, and ability to lead from the front have made him one of the most respected captains in Indian cricket.

Rahul's Captaincy Journey in the IPL

KL Rahul's leadership career began with Punjab Kings in IPL 2020. He captained the franchise for two seasons and delivered impressive performances with the bat, although team success remained elusive.

Ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, Lucknow Super Giants signed Rahul and entrusted him with captaincy responsibilities. Under his leadership, the newly-formed franchise enjoyed immediate success, reaching the playoffs in both 2022 and 2023.

However, LSG's campaign in 2024 ended in disappointment as the team finished outside the top four. Following the season, Rahul's association with Lucknow ended, paving the way for a fresh chapter with Delhi Capitals.

Now, the experienced batter appears ready for another opportunity to lead an IPL side.

Rahul Was Delhi Capitals' Standout Performer in IPL 2026

While Delhi Capitals struggled collectively in IPL 2026, KL Rahul enjoyed one of the finest seasons of his career.

The right-handed batter amassed 593 runs in 14 matches and emerged as the team's leading run-scorer. His consistency at the top of the order kept Delhi alive in several matches, even though the franchise ultimately failed to secure a playoff berth.

Rahul also etched his name into IPL history during Delhi's home match against Punjab Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 25.

Opening the innings, he produced a breathtaking unbeaten 152 off just 67 deliveries. The knock made him the first Indian batter and only the third player overall to score 150 or more runs in an IPL match.

The innings also set another record, as Rahul surpassed the previous highest individual score by an Indian batter in IPL history.

Despite his extraordinary effort, Delhi Capitals suffered defeat against Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings, highlighting the team's struggles throughout the season.

Only Player to Score 1,000 Runs for Three IPL Teams

KL Rahul's consistency across franchises has made him one of the most accomplished batters in IPL history.

He remains the only player to score more than 1,000 runs for three different teams, showcasing his remarkable adaptability and longevity.

Whether representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, or Delhi Capitals, Rahul has consistently delivered with the bat and established himself among the league's elite performers.

His experience and ability to anchor innings are viewed as key reasons behind Delhi Capitals' interest in handing him leadership responsibilities.

Rishabh Pant Set for Emotional Homecoming?

Perhaps the biggest surprise in the report is the possibility of Rishabh Pant returning to Delhi Capitals.

Pant was the face of the franchise between 2016 and 2024 and captained the team before moving to Lucknow Super Giants during the IPL 2025 mega auction, where he was bought for a record Rs 27 crore.

However, things did not go according to plan in Lucknow.

Pant struggled with the bat in both IPL 2025 and IPL 2026, and his poor run of form affected the team's performance. LSG finished at the bottom of the points table in 2026, following which Pant stepped down as captain.

Now, reports suggest that the explosive wicketkeeper-batter could return to Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2027.

If the reunion materializes, it would mark one of the biggest transfer stories in recent IPL history and could provide Delhi with an experienced match-winner capable of changing games single-handedly.

Kuldeep Yadav Could Move to Lucknow Super Giants

While Delhi Capitals may welcome back Pant, another established Indian star could be leaving the franchise.

Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who joined Delhi Capitals in 2022, reportedly faces an uncertain future after enduring a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign.

Kuldeep struggled to produce consistent performances and was even dropped from the playing XI during the season.

His dip in form has sparked speculation regarding a move to Lucknow Super Giants, who are expected to make significant changes after their disastrous campaign.

A switch to Lucknow could provide Kuldeep with a fresh start and an opportunity to rediscover his best form.

Delhi Capitals Prepare for a New Era

With captaincy changes, potential player transfers, and fresh ambitions, Delhi Capitals appear set for a new beginning ahead of IPL 2027.

KL Rahul's likely appointment as captain could bring stability and experience, while the possible return of Rishabh Pant would add firepower and emotional value to the franchise.

As preparations for the next season gather momentum, Delhi fans will hope these changes finally help the team secure its elusive maiden IPL title.
