KL-Rahul will play the role of wicketkeeper against the Proteas. The forthcoming tests will be missed by Mohammed Shami, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Ishan Kishan. Shami and Gaikwad are out due to injuries, while Ishan Kishan has been withdrawn from the squad due to personal reasons.

KS Bharat and Abhimanyu Easwaran have been called up as replacements for Ruturaj and Ishan while no replacement has been announced for Shami, and Mukesh Kumar or Prasidh Krishna might play the role of the 3rd seamer in the test series against the Proteas.
