Shubman Gill takes over captaincy from ‘sacked’ Rohit Sharma as India announce squad for ODI series against Australia
The Indian Cricket Team unveiled their squad for the ODI series against the Australian Cricket Team. The two teams will be locking horns with each other in the three-match series, set to be played from October 19 to October 25 in Perth Adelaide and Sydney.
The major shocking news about the squad was Rohit Sharma getting sacked as the ODI captain. This comes as a massive surprise as the batter recently guided India to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 win without even losing a single game in the tournament.
The baton has been passed and it is Shubman Gill, who will now be taking charge in the ODIs after having acquired the role in the Tests as well. The premier batter was given the role in the longest of the game ahead of the England series and impressed many with his heroics.
That potentially worked in his favour as he was announced the captain in the ODIs, keeping in mind the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027. Another major development from the squad was the Shreya Iyer as the vice-captain of the team.
Iyer stole the limelight with his impressive performances in the IPL 2025, where he took the Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final. He will be key for India in the middle-order along with KL Rahul, who is the first-choice wicket-keeper in the team. Yashasvi Jaiswal is the third opener in the side.
Dhruv Jurel has also made a cut in the team along with all-rounders in Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel. Ravindra Jadeja has been dropped, while Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the series.
Mohammed Siraj will lead the pace attack, which features Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, and Prasidh Krishna. Kuldeep Yadav is the specialist spinner in the team.
