Rohit Sharma's future as captain under massive danger, BCCI to take this HUGE step
India captain Rohit Sharma might not lead the team after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. As per the reports in the Times of India, it is learned that the future of the opening batter as the skipper will depend on the outcome of the final against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai.
If India loses the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 then the team will be moving on Rohit Sharma as the captain. The reports claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wants a stable leader for the ICC World Cup 2027, and preparations for the tournament will begin based on the result of the final of CT.
However, if India wins the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the BCCI will find it difficult to name a new captain until Rohit Sharma steps down himself. The reports claimed that chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir have already had conversations with the BCCI and Rohit related to the future of the team.
Retiring is his call but there will be another discussion around continuing with captaincy - Source close to BCCI on Rohit Sharma
The source close to the developments claimed that Rohit Sharma is keen to after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as well but there will be discussions around captaincy. He stressed that BCCI will be looking for the future only if the senior batter retires. Speaking to the Times of India, he said:
"Rohit still believes there is some cricket left in him. He has been told to communicate his plans going forward. Retiring is his call but there will be another discussion around continuing with captaincy. Rohit himself understands the need to have a stable captain if the team wants to prepare for a World Cup. There have been talks with Kohli, too, but there doesn’t seem to be much anxiety around him.
"The board will wait for Rohit’s decision after the Champions Trophy. If, by any chance, he chooses to retire, then the board will see what needs to be done. One can’t discount the fact that he won the T20 World Cup in July and has led well in the Champions Trophy as well,” the source said.
India, under Rohit Sharma, has been extremely dominant in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. They have won all their league games and will be playing New Zealand in the final on Sunday (9th March) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai.
If Rohit Sharma retires or steps down from leadership, then there are chances that Shubman Gill will be named as the captain. The young batter is currently vice-captain of the team and has looked in great form in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
