Pant Dropped Again? Ruturaj Gaikwad vs Rishabh Pant - Who Fits Better Against Keshav Maharaj

India defeated South Africa in the 1st ODI in Ranchi by 17 runs. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Skipper KL Rahul all played key roles in the victory. However, apart from these batters, some of the batters failed in the 1st ODI vs South Africa, especially Yashavsi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who are expected to do well in this game.
After Gaikwad's 8 run inning in the 1st ODI vs South Africa, debate started all over social media about the selection of Ruturaj Gaikwad at no.4 instead of Rishabh Pant. However, It is expected that Pant can replace Gaikwad in the 2nd ODI between India and South Africa, which is scheduled to be played on December 03, 2025, in Raipur.
Recently, Ruturaj Gaikwad played exceptionally in domestic cricket; therefore, he got a chance in the ODI squad after quite a long time. But Gaikwad failed to utilise the chance in the first ODI, and the Indian Team management was also looking for a reliable middle-order batsman who can make big partnerships and also play aggressive cricket when needed.
Why can Pant replace Gaikwad in the 2nd ODI?
Ruturaj Gaikwad is a natural opener, and playing him at no.4 means India isn’t utilizing his true potential, but the opening slot is already fixed by Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal. But, Pant is a more reliable option in the middle-order, he is known for his aggressive batting and has played some of the crucial knocks at this position.
The decision to choose Pant over Gaikwad for the No.4 spot is quite tricky, but it will be good for the team's stability. If Rohit and Virat didn’t perform well, then the Indian team might get all out under 200. So, India needs to pick perfect players for those spots to make a better and future-ready team.
Keshav Maharaj to play 2nd ODI:
South African top spinner Keshav Maharaj was rested for the first ODI, but now, he will be playing the second match as India is leading the series by 1-0, and it’s important to win this game. Maharaj has troubled Indian batters a lot in the recent test series, and he is quite effective in the Indian conditions.
Therefore, it’s going to be a tough challenge for the Indian middle-order batters in the 2nd ODI. Keshav Maharaj is a left-arm spinner, and Rishabh Pant has quite good records, so he might get a chance in the 2nd ODI over Gaikwad.
