Since their promising show in the IPL 2023, the franchise has gone on to add a bit more firepower to their squad during the IPL 2024 auction. Here this article will take you through Mumbai Indians Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats Analysis for IPL 2024 – MI SWOT Analysis.

Mumbai Indians has been one of the most valuable sides in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise came to the limelight after winning its maiden IPL title back in 2013 under the young responsible shoulders of captain Rohit Sharma and ever since then it has kept pushing the bar higher with each season.

Mumbai won their last IPL title in 2020 and since then the franchise hasn’t clicked as they would have liked, so to speak. Though there have been patches of performances, but it hasn’t come at the right time for the last couple of years.

However, the IPL 2024 promises to be bright for the franchise in Blue and Gold. With their valuable additions to bolster the already packed squad, it seems that they are going to rock the upcoming edition of the Indian T20 tournament, which is slated to begin on March 22.

The IPL 2024 will see a change in Mumbai’s leadership position, wherein incumbent Rohit Sharma will not be seen spearheading the team for the first time since IPL 2013. This time, it will be all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who will have the captain’s cap.

Interestingly, in a game-changer move, MI struck a deal with Hardik Pandya ahead of the IPL 2024 auction to leave his franchise – Gujarat Titans – and join his parent team – Mumbai Indians. The deal worth INR 15 crores was signed as a part of IPL’s trade policy to get the services of Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans.

A lot of other players have also been added to the team during the IPL 2024 auction, the details of which are given below.

Over the years, Mumbai Indians has been known as a batting-heavy side and the franchise has often proved it as well. However, for the first time, Mumbai’s pace bowling has come to the limelight. During the IPL 2022 mega-auction, MI’s pacers battery came into the spotlight after the franchise bagged the deal of English pacer Jofra Archer. It was anticipated that the pair of Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer would make a pair to watch, but that couldn’t happen.

Archer missed the IPL 2022 and played a little part in the IPL 2023. Jasprit Bumrah on the other side missed the IPL 2023 due to his injury concerns.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians have made smart buys in the IPL 2024 Auction owing to which its pace battery has now become formidable. The inclusion of South African pacer Gerald Coetzee, Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madhushanka and Nuwan Thushara have filled the gaps for the team.

Mumbai Indians Weaknesses

Although Mumbai Indians (MI) managed to get the services of all-rounder Mohammad Nabi for the IPL 2024, one would still feel that spin bowling is still not MI’s cup of tea. The franchise could have got the Wanindu Hasaranga, but it didn’t happen and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) got the spinner for INR 1.5 Crores during the auction.

Nabi will add depth to Mumbai’s batting, but his presence will not ensure that the team is covered as far as spin bowling is concerned. Besides Mohammad Nabi, MI has the likes of Shreyas Gopal, Kumar Kartikeya, and Piyush Chawla as other specialist spinners.

Now that the leadership roles have been changed, Mumbai Indians will have a fresh chance to rewrite the history books by becoming the first team in the league’s history to win six IPL titles.

The squad is present with sufficient firepower and there aren’t any major loopholes as of now. It would be safe to say that MI has got a dream team to begin their IPL 2024 campaign. With every base covered, the franchise will aim to once again raise the bar and win the sixth IPL title in 2024.

Mumbai Indians Threats

One possible threat to Mumbai Indians would be the mindset and morale of the team. The entire captaincy episode hasn’t yet settled. There is certainly disappointment among the fans, but it won’t be wrong to say that the players have also been affected by it. A couple of players have put some cryptic stories on their social media profiles as soon as the captaincy change was made public.

The likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah posted a few cryptic messages. However, the team has to make sure that it doesn’t affect them and their performance during the IPL 2024.
