It’s too late for Yuzvendra Chahal to make it in T20 World Cup Squad: Saba Karim.

ICC T20 World Cup 2021: Team India’s limited-overs spin wizard Yuzvendra Chahal was overlooked by the Indian selectors during the selection of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 squad which is scheduled in the UAE and Oman.

The spinner and the whole cricketing world was taken aback by the selector’s decision which isn’t justifiable keeping in mind the intensity of the World Cup matches, however, the selection more or less goes hand in hand with the performance.

Chahal, prior to the start of the second leg of the Vivo IPL 2021, had an unforgettable outing in whichever match he played. The spinner was expensive in the recent Sri Lanka limited-overs tour and was also ineffective for RCB during the first leg of the IPL 2021.

The out of form Chahal during the selection of the T20 World Cup 2021 was ignored by the selection committee and in-form Rahul Chahar and Varun Chakravarthy got clearance owing to their consistent performances.

However, the senior spinner has regained his form and is turning out to be the best performer for RCB in the UAE second phase of IPL 2021. Chahal has, till now, picked up 10 wickets in four matches in the UAE and has also won a Man of the Match award in the clash against Rajasthan Royals.

The recent performances of Chahal have definitely ringed the selector’s bell, however, former Indian cricketer and selector Saba Karim feels it’s too late for Yuzvendra Chahal to make it to the T20 World Cup 2021 squad.

“I think it’s too late now. People have been talking about making changes in the squad, but that can only happen if someone gets injured. You also have to see Rahul Chahar was performing very well when he got selected. We saw both of them (Chahal and Chahar) in Sri Lanka, and his performances there were definitely noteworthy, which is why he was picked by selectors,” said Saba Karim in the Khelneeti podcast on Youtube.

Chahal will have to wait for his turn: Saba Karim

Saba Karim, 52-years old, further opined that the tweaker will have to wait despite improved performances as the spinners picked at first place will be given the priorities and their performances will be noted down.

“Now, in the second half of the IPL, Chahal has shown great improvement in his performances, which is very good. But he will have to wait a little. The players who have been selected, their form and performances will be seen before Chahal is given a chance again.”

The former cricketer also considers that the selectors should have picked players with enough T20I experience as the level of competition in the World Cup matches is quite high as compared to the IPL.

“There has been talk of so many youngsters doing well but when you are picking a squad for the World Cup, you have to go in with some experienced players because the World Cup is a different platform. If you look at previous World Cups winners, those players do well that have experience of having played more T20 matches at that level. We should also not forget that there is a big difference in the quality of competition in the World Cup and IPL.
