IPL 2023: The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) has been the best edition so far in the history of the tournament. There has been a staggering competition between bat and ball and it’s fair to say that it’ll be an enthralling end of the season. This edition already has seen teams posting over 200 runs more than any other season and almost every game has been a nail-biter.  One team has 12 points, three have 10, two have 8, whereas three have 6 and one is reeling at 4. This speaks volumes about where the league is heading.

IPL 2023: The competition is such that even players from the losing side have won the Player of the Match awards. There have been three instances so far and in this piece, we will take a look at who won awards in losing cause. 

Shikhar Dhawan

Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shikhar Dhawan became the first Player in the IPL 2023 to win the Player of the Match award in a losing cause. He achieved the feat for his blistering innings against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) when he played a lone hand for his side. The opening batter scored unbeaten 99 runs in 66 balls when every other batted failed to go past the 25-run mark. He scored 12 fours and 5 sixes in his innings and helped his side post a total of 143 runs on the board, which SRH chased in 17.1 overs. 

Venkatesh Iyer

Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer was the second Player to win the Player of the Match Award in a losing cause in IPL 2023. He won the award for his sensational hundred in the game against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. The southpaw was the lone warrior for his side and scored 104 runs in 51 balls whereas the second-best score was of Andre Russell, who scored 21 runs. Iyer’s scintillating knock helped KKR post a total of 185 runs on the board. Although they lost the game Iyer was the standout performer.

Delhi Capitals all-rounder Micthell Marsh also finds himself in the list of Players who won the Player of the Match award in the losing cause. He achieved the feat for his rollicking performance in the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He contributed sensationally well with both bat and ball but couldn’t help his side win. With the ball, he took 4 wickets and then chipped in with a great knock of 63 runs in 39 balls.
