ICC Warns Bangladesh

The International Cricket Council (ICC) gave the final ultimatum to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB); it could lose its place in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 if it does not confirm travel to India by January 21, 2026. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is all set to start from February 07, 2026, in India and Sri Lanka.

As per the reports from Espncricinfo, the ICC has informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board that if they fail to meet the deadline, then Scotland will replace Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2026. This report came after a meeting held between ICC officials and BCB in Dhaka on January 17, 2026.

However, the chances are very low that Bangladesh will not travel to India, as there are lots of financial commitments involved, so they are likely to come to India for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. But if they fail, Scotland will replace them in Group C based on the ICC Men’s T20 Team Rankings.

Currently, Bangladesh is in Group C of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 along with teams like England, West Indies, Nepal, and Italy. Bangladesh’s group stage games were scheduled to be played in Kolkata and Mumbai, but they refused to come to India due to security concerns.

Bangladesh’s Security Concerns:

This whole drama between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and ICC is centered around the refusal to travel in India, which is the primary host of the T20 World  Cup 2026. The BCB has repeatedly cited security concerns and requested ICC to move its matches out of India, preferably to co-host Sri Lanka.

However, ICC has rejected Bangladesh’s claims and clarified that there is no specific or targeted security threat against the Bangladesh team or any other side in the upcoming ICC tournament.

It all started when Bangladesh star pacer Mustafizur Rahman was released by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) from the IPL 2026 squad after many Hindus were killed in Bangladesh in recent times. In retaliation, BCB refused to travel to India for the T20 World Cup 2026.

ICC Rejects Alternative Proposals:

The BCB proposed a group switch with Ireland, which is scheduled to play all its group-stage matches in Sri Lanka. However, ICC turned down this proposal as the tournament schedule and structure cannot be changed at this stage.
