Gill OUT, Samson IN: Shubman Gill Ruled Out of IND vs SA T20I Series Due to Injury

India's vice-captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the remainder of the India vs South Africa T20I series due to a foot injury. Gill will miss the fourth and fifth T20Is and Sanju Samson is likely to replace him in the Playing XI.

A Big Blow for the Indian Men’s National Cricket Team as vice-captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the remainder of the India vs South Africa T20I series due to a foot injury. Gill will miss the fourth and fifth T20Is, which are scheduled to be played on December 17 and December 19, 2025, in Lucknow and Ahmedabad, respectively.

According to reports from PTI and Cricbuzz, Shubman Gill sustained the injury during a training session ahead of the IND vs SA 4th T20I. The BCCI medical team has advised him to rest as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is just a few weeks away so, Team Management doesn’t want to risk him before the tournament.

As of now, the Indian Team is leading the five-match T20I series between India and South Africa by 2-1. India needs one more victory to win this series against South Africa; however, it’s not going to be an easy task for the Indian team to defeat South Africa.

Sanju Samson Likely to Get Opportunity:

With Shubman Gill ruled out, Sanju Samson is expected to open for the Indian Team alongside Abhishek Sharma in the remaining 4th and 5th T20Is. Samson last played a T20I game for India in October against Australia, and now, he will be opening once again for the Indian team after quite a long time.

Interestingly, Sanju Samson has been recorded as an opener than Shubman Gill in the T20I format, and now, he is getting the opportunity back, so it's good news for the Indian Team as Abhishek Sharma needs a reliable partner.

Why not Yashasvi Jaiswal?

Yashasvi Jaiswal will not be considered as a replacement for Shubman Gill due to his sudden health scare during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). Jaiswal was hospitalised after suffering from acute gastroenteritis and now, his condition is stable, but he is likely to be unavailable for the next few days.
