Men’s Big Bash League(BBL) has been reduced to 44 matches per season: Big announcement from Cricket Australia, Men’s Big Bash League matches have been reduced to 44 matches after an exciting new broadcast deal. Under the terms of new media rights, Cricket Australia cuts the matches of BBL to broadcast for more international matches.

Cricket Australia cut down the number of matches in the Big Bash League from 61 to 44 games due to the workload on players and their availability for the national team. Foxtel and Seven agreed to broadcast all the men’s and women’s international and BBL matches. 

Cricket Australia signed a new broadcast deal with Foxtel Group and Seven west media for 1.51 billion US dollars(Euro 849,000) for seasons 2024 to 2031. Major cuts in matches of Big Bash League came after this deal to increase viewers of BBL during summers.

Cricket Australia decided to increase their player’s availability for BBL and conduct prime matches of BBL on summer vacation of schools and universities. The short duration of BBL will increase excitement in Teams and spectators. Cricket Australia CEO said they want to see big players in BBL for the upcoming season.

Men’s Big Bash 2023-2024 edition will have 44 matches from the current 61 matches to reduce the duration of BBL. In the last edition of BBL, 61 games were played in two-and-a-half months. Now Cricket Australia cut the duration of BBL from two and a half months to one and a half months to increase the popularity of BBL and it will have 40 league matches and then four finals. 

BBL cuts matches to 44 due to Foreign leagues:

Cricket Australia is facing the problem of missing Star Players’ availability for a domestic league, so they decide to cut the 17 matches of BBL to increase the player’s availability for BBL. New Leagues like SA20 and ILT20 affect the availability of foreign players for BBL, which has reduced the popularity of BBL in recent years.

In the last Edition of BBL, players like David Warner, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Pat Cummins missed the whole season due to International matches of the Australian National Team. Cricket Australia cut the matches of BBL to increase the key player’s availability.
