New Zealand Squad Announced For T20 World Cup 2026, Santner Set to Lead the Charge

Mitchell Santner will lead a spin-heavy New Zealand squad in the T20 World Cup 2026, blending experience, recovering fast bowlers and versatile all-rounders for sub-continent conditions.

New Zealand have announced a balanced but spin-heavy squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with Mitchell Santner named as captain. The tournament will be played in India and Sri Lanka, and conditions are expected to favour spin bowling, something the Black Caps have clearly planned for.

Santner will lead a strong group of spinners, including Ish Sodhi, Michael Bracewell, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra. With three of New Zealand’s group matches scheduled at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium, a venue known for assisting spin, this combination could play a key role.

The pace attack is equally experienced. Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry have been selected despite recovering from calf injuries, while Adam Milne and Jacob Duffy add speed and control. Duffy, currently one of the top-ranked T20I bowlers, will be playing his first World Cup. Kyle Jamieson has been named as a travelling reserve.

In the batting department, New Zealand have trusted familiar names. Finn Allen and Tim Seifert provide explosive starts, while Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell bring calm and experience in the middle order. Seifert will handle wicketkeeping duties, with Conway as backup.

A few players, including Ferguson and Henry, may briefly miss matches due to paternity leave, but New Zealand Cricket has confirmed all injured players are on track to be fit for the tournament.

Coach Rob Walter described the squad as experienced and well prepared for sub-continent conditions. With warm-up matches and a challenging tour of India ahead, the Black Caps will look to fine-tune their game before opening their World Cup campaign against Afghanistan on February 8 in Chennai.

With smart selection and familiar conditions, New Zealand will quietly fancy their chances as Santner leads the team into another global challenge.
