BAN vs AFG: Bangladesh's win against Afghanistan brings an exciting twist in Asia Cup, know Bangladesh's Super-4 qualification scenario.

Bangladesh’s crucial win over Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2025 has kept their Super Four hopes alive, with the final qualification now hinging on the Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka clash.

Bangladesh and Afghanistan faced each other in the 9th match of Asia Cup 2025 played at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, this match was very important for both the teams to win, where on one hand Afghanistan's victory would have directly qualified for the Super-4, on the other hand, Bangladesh needed a win to stay alive in the Asia Cup.

After winning the toss, captain Litton Das decided to bat first and his decision was made successful by his openers. Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan made a partnership of 63 runs for the first wicket, Saif played a solid innings of 30 runs in 28 balls, while on the other hand Tanzid played an explosive innings of 52 runs in just 31 balls with the help of four fours and three sixes.

In bowling, Noor Ahmad and captain Rashid Khan bowled economically from Afghanistan's side, both got 2-2 wickets. Azmatullah Omarzai got one wicket.

Chasing a target of 154 runs, Afghan-11 was all-out for 146 runs. Opener Sediqullah Atal was LBW on the very first ball of the innings by Nasum Ahmed. As a result, the team did not get a good start. In the middle order, except Azmatullah Omarzai, no batsman was able to score runs. Omarzai scored 30 runs in just 16 balls but that was not enough for the team to win.

For Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman took three wickets while Nasum Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed and Rishad Hossain all took two wickets each.

Bangladesh’s Qualification Scenario for Super-4

Bangladesh now have 4 points from 3 matches, but their place in the Super Four is still not fully secured:

  • If Sri Lanka defeat Afghanistan: Bangladesh qualify directly along with Sri Lanka.

  • If Afghanistan beat Sri Lanka: All three teams (SL, BAN, AFG) finish on 4 points. In this case, Net Run Rate (NRR) will decide the two teams going through.

Why This Win Was Crucial for Bangladesh

Had Bangladesh lost to Afghanistan, they would have been eliminated from the tournament.  Instead, this hard-fought victory has kept them in contention, setting up an exciting finish to Group B.  Their Super Four hopes are now heavily reliant on the outcome of Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka, which has effectively become a virtual elimination game.
