Babar Azam Controversy: Mohammad Yousuf Says “Everyone Turned Against Me” After Drop Suggestions

Pakistan's former legend Mohammad Yousuf said that he had to resign from his role as selector after he suggested dropping star batter Babar Azam from the team due to poor performances. Babar Azam is currently struggling with his form; he has scored only 66 runs in three matches of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and has a poor strike rate.

Mohammad Yousuf, who is one of Pakistan’s greatest batters, made a shocking statement during a podcast interview. He revealed that he suggested resting Babar Azam from the team, but his recommendation was strongly opposed by the team management.

Yousuf said, “The moment I suggested resting Babar, everyone suddenly turned against me. I had to resign because of this.” This shows the pressure and politics inside Pakistan’s selection committee, and honest opinion or feedback isn't accepted. Yousuf felt forced to step down from his role after he opposed Babar Azam.​

​Babar Azam’s performance in the T20 World Cup 2026 has been disappointing so far. He has scored only 66 runs in three matches and is also struggling to strike balls, which is highly required in today’s T20 cricket. ​Mohammad Yousuf said that Babar’s problem is not just form but the skills needed for T20 cricket. He said form can be temporary, but if a player struggles for years, it becomes a bigger issue. Yousuf added, “A player can be out of form for two or three series, but Babar has struggled for two or three years.”
