Australia announce shocking T20 World Cup squad

On the 1st of January, Cricket Australia announced their official 15-member squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Mitchell Marsh, the veteran all-rounder, has been named the captain of the side.

Considering that the matches will be played in the subcontinent on tracks similar to those of India and Sri Lanka, the Australian selectors have opted for a wide variety of spinners in their side. Moreover, the Aussies have been placed in the same group as hosts Sri Lanka.

Placed in the same group, Australia would face Sri Lanka, Ireland, Zimbabwe and Oman in the ICC T20 World Cup group stage before they advance to the next phase of the tournament.

Australia pick 5 spinners for T20 World Cup

The Australian selection committee has always startled all with their choices. This time around, despite Pat Cummins' presence in the squad, Mitchell Marsh has been named as the skipper of the team for the upcoming World Cup.

Considering that the subcontinent tracks will offer help for spinners, Australia has picked two frontline spinners in Adam Zampa and Matthew Kuhnemann. To back these spinners in the middle overs, Cooper Connolly, the young Perth Scorchers all-rounder who is in red-hot form in the BBL, has also been added to the squad.

Glenn Maxwell and Matt Short can be more than just part-timers in the squad. Overall, Australia has produced a spin-heavy track.

In a surprising turn of events, Glenn Maxwell has also been claimed to be a wicket-keeping substitute for Australia if Josh Inglis is ruled out due to an injury.

Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Tim David: Australia pick all injured players despite uncertainty

Pat Cummins, the Australian skipper, recently made a comeback to red-ball cricket and played the third Ashes Test at Adelaide. However, it is clear that he hasn't recovered completely yet and is keeping cautious, eyeing the upcoming T20 World Cup.

However, considering his recovery routine, George Bailey has shown positivity towards his return ahead of the World Cup. The same works out for injured pacer Josh Hazlewood and Tim David, who recently suffered a blow during a BBL match with the Hobart Hurricanes.

"Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Tim David are tracking well, and we are confident they will be available for the World Cup.

"This is a preliminary squad, so should changes need to be made, they will be made ahead of the support period," concluded Bailey, also claiming that the squad for the Pakistan T20s might not be entirely the same as the World Cup squad.
