Afghanistan Announce T20 World Cup 2026 Squad, Rashid Khan Appointed Captain
Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to be played in India and Sri Lanka. Afghanistan’s star leg-spinner Rashid Khan has been named the captain and will be leading the team in the T20 World Cup 2026, which is all set to start from February 07, 2026.
Afghanistan is in Group D of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, alongside New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, and the UAE. This is also called the “Group of Dead” by the fans, as three quality T20 sides are in the same group. It’s going to be a tough challenge for Afghanistan, but they have proven in the past and are likely to finish in Top 2.
In the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, Afghanistan defeated teams like Australia and New Zealand. They qualified for the semi-finals but unfortunately, lost against South Africa by 9 wickets. The tournament was exceptional for Afghanistan, and they will be looking to play the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 with the same energy.
Key Players Make Comeback:
Afghanistan’s key all-rounder Gulbadin Naib and left-arm pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi returned to the squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Both these star players missed Afghanistan's white-ball tour of Bangladesh in October, 2025.
Naveen-ul-Haq has also made a comeback after recovering from a shoulder injury that ruled him out of the Asia Cup 2025. The Duo of Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq will be crucial and lethal for Afghanistan in the upcoming ICC Tournament.
