Kolkata Knight Riders' star fast-bowling all-rounder Andre Russell has announced a shocking decision of his retirement from the IPL. A few days ago, the three-time winners released him ahead of the IPL 2026 Mini-Auction. However, Russell made it clear that he does not want to play for any other franchise, and the decision to not play in the IPL after KKR was the right one for him.

Russell's relationship with KKR was special. He scored a total of 2591 runs and took 120 wickets for Kolkata in his IPL career. His explosive batting, decisive spells and surprise fielding made him the most effective all-rounder in the IPL for a decade.

Russell dominated India's premier T20 leagues, winning the 'Most Valuable Player' (MVP) awards in 2015 and 2019. He was instrumental in the Kolkata-based side winning the IPL title twice in 2014 and 2024. He also has 14 Man of the Match awards to his name, which is a testament to his match-winning ability.

Russell's services were retained by the franchises for 12 crore Indian rupees crore prior to the previous season's mega-auction, but Kolkata chose to let him go following a subpar performance in the 2025 edition of the tournament.  In 13 innings, he conceded runs at a rate of over 11 per over while scoring just 163 runs and taking seven wickets.
