Abhishek Sharma to open with Shubman Gill as Indian openers for Asia Cup 2025 announced
In what has been the latest development, as per the reports in News 24, it is learned that Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill will be opening the innings for India in the Asia Cup 2025. The tournament will be played on 9th September, with the final to be played on 28th September.
The Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025 was announced recently and the major highlight of the team was Shubman Gill making a comeback to the side after a while. His last game for the team in the format came in 2024.
Shubman Gill was appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2025. He was recently appointed as the test skipper and impressed many with his leadership during the series, leading India to a 2-2 draw.
Shubman Gill will be opening the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma in the Asia Cup 2025
With Shubman Gill being named in the Indian side, it is expected that he would directly walk into the XI. However, as per Journalist Vaibhav Bhola, the youngster will be opening the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma in the Asia Cup 2025.
Abhishek Sharma is the number one-ranked batter in the T20Is and has slammed truckloads of runs for the side ever since he made his debut for the team. He and Gill would form a solid pair at the top as India will be eyeing to win their second consecutive title.
With Shubman Gill opening the innings, this means that Sanju Samson will have to face the unfortunate snub as an opener. The keeper-batter has done an incredible job as an opener, slamming three centuries last year.
This means that either he will have to bat down the order or will have to warm the bench, allowing Jitesh Sharma to play as he is better suited down the order. Gill, along with Abhishek and Sanju, will be crucial for India's chances in the tournament.
India will play their first game of the Asia Cup 2025 against the United Arab Emirates on 10th September. They would be keen to start the tournament on a high and win it yet another time.
