Despite Joe Root's 138, Australia’s 510 and a weak England second innings (239) led to an easy 64-run chase. Ben Stokes-led England's poor outing in the 2nd test match of the 2025 NRMA INSURANCE Ashes Test Series versus Australia has resulted in a major slip in the points table of the 2025-27 edition of the World Test Championship for the Three-Lions.
The day & night test-match at Brisbane's iconic cricket ground - The Gabba, saw the Englishmen lose the match by a margin of eight wickets in a span of four days. This defeat in the second match has pushed Ben Stokes & his men down to the 7th rank in the WTC Points-Table with just 26 points to their name and a 30.93 PCT.

How did the match turn out?

The first inning of the visitors ended at a score of 332/10 thanks to the undefeated knock of 138 runs from the bat of former skipper Joe Root. Aussie seamer Mitchell Starc wreaked havoc with the ball once again as he registered six scalps to his name.
In reply, the Mighty Australians put up 510 runs on the board as five of their batsmen scored half centuries - Steven Smith, Jake Weatherald, Mithcell Starc, Marnus Labuschagne and wicket-keeper Alex Carey

England inflicted an all out on the Aussies but when they came out to bat for their second inning, they just managed to put up 239 runs on the board. The home side (68-2) then chased down the target of 64 runs with ease and registered a comfortable victory.

England's struggles & the dominance of the 2023 WTC Winners

With this victory in Brisbane, the Kangaroos continue to dominate the standings of the World Test Championship with a perfect 100% PCT record in this current cycle of the event. They have triumphed in all matches that they have participated in so far, racking up sixty points with a hundred percent PCT.

England, on the other hand, haven't been at their best in this WTC cycle, managing to reign supreme in just two games out of seven. A two-point penalty for sluggish over rates during the summer India Test series has made their problems worse.

England's slip up in the standings means good news for New Zealand

England's fall in the points table of the 2025-27 WTC edition means good news for the inaugural wtc winners New Zealand as they have moved up to the sixth rank with a 33.31% PCT. Their first match of the three-game series versus the Windies ended in a draw.
Team India meanwhile continute to remain below Pakistan at the fifth position with a 48.13% PCT after securins wins four times out of nine test matches in this current cycle.

Updated positions of other teams

The Kangaroos continue to reign supreme at the top and they are followed by Reigning Champions South Africa (74% PCT), Sri Lanka (66.50% PCT) & Shan Masood-led Pakistan (49% PCT) in the overall WTC Standings.

With a pitiful 5.53% PCT after 6 games, the West Indies are still sitting at the last position of the points table. The only other team behind seventh-place England in the points table is Bangladesh (16.67%).
