Why India Choose Mohammed Siraj Over Harshit Rana for T20 World Cup 2026?
Team India has suffered a setback ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 as fast bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury in the warm-up matches. However, as per the reports, Mohammed Siraj is likely to replace Harshit Rana in India’s Squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 to strengthen the pace attack for the tournament.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is all set to begin from February 07, 2026, and India will be playing their opening game against the USA at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India is the defending champion, and they will be looking to retain the title on home soil; however, no other team has done this before, so it’s going to be quite challenging.
Harshit Rana Ruled Out Due to Injury
Harshit Rana got injured during the warm-up match against South Africa on February 04, 2026. Rana seemed in little pain while bowling, and he only bowled one over, conceding 16 runs before walking off the field. After medical assessments, Rana has suffered a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee.
As per the media reports, He has been advised to have surgery, and most likely, Harshit Rana will not be available for the whole tournament.
Mohd. Siraj Likely to Replace
After Harshit Rana officially ruled out, Mohammed Siraj is expected to replace him in India's T20 World Cup 2026 squad. However, Siraj wasn’t part of the original squad, but he will be the most likely replacement of Harshit Rana, seeing his pace, bounce and lower-order batting ability.
Mohd. Siraj is quite an experienced bowler compared to Harshit Rana, and he was part of India's title-winning T20 World Cup 2024 squad. Siraj has played 16 T20Is so far and picked 14 wickets at an economy rate of 7.79. But he hasn’t played any T20I game since July 2025, but in the meantime, he was actively playing domestic cricket.
What Rana’s Absence Means for India?
Harshit Rana’s injury is a massive blow for the Indian team as he was giving consistent performances with both bat and ball. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh are the frontline bowlers, but Rana provides more depth to batting and flexibility in bowling combinations. Losing him reduces the flexibility, especially in the batting department, but Siraj is also a decent option.
