Why did Ravindra Jadeja leave Chennai Super Kings to join Rajasthan Royals - Reason Revealed
Former Indian Head-Coach and cricketer Anil Kumble discussess the strategy of five-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) behind trading star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to season 1 winners Rajasthan Royals (RR) and also expressed his surprise at the franchise's decision to involve the 36-year-old in the trade deal while also asking if the all-rounder can poitentially be considered as a captaincy option by the RR Team management.
Speaking on JioStar's TATA IPL Retention Show, the legendary cricketer talked about how the Chennai-based team plan to rebuild following the departure of Jadeja, saying, "The trio of Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad will probably form the backbone of CSK's batting order in the top six. As evidenced by Ravindra Jadeja's trade to the Rajasthan Royals, they must move past their aging players."
"After the release of Matheesha Pathirana, CSK's bowling-attack needs strengthening. With Chinaman bowler Noor Ahmad playing the role of the leg-spinner, Australian seamer Nathan Ellis emerges as Chennai's key overseas fast-bowler. They still need additional Indian pacers in addition to Khaleel Ahmed and one Indian spinner as a replacement for Ravindra Jadeja." He continued, "An additional foreign fast bowler would also aid in balancing their attack."
The former RCB Skiper also shared that he was delighted to see Ruturaj Gaikwad continue as the captain of the Chennai-based team after getting ruled out of IPL 2025 due to a hand-fracture and he suggested that the right-hander should continue opening the innings inorder to provide necessary stability to Chennai's innings.
"After his injury last season, it's wonderful to see Ruturaj Gaikwad back as the skipper of Chennai. He should open the innings himself, in my opinion. He's is the ideal opener for CSK, even though they have the talented Ayush Mhatre & Sanju Samson in their ranks. The stability the squad needs will come from his leadership and top batting," according to Kumble.
The head-coach of India also discussed the trade-transfer of Ravindra Jadeja to 2008 winners Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the potential of them considering him as a leadership option, stating, "Jadeja's return to RR is a significant decision. In general, CSK never lets go of its key players, particularly a player of a calibre of Ravindra Jadeja, who has been associated with them for a long time. They let him depart which astonished me. Wicket-Keeper batsman Sanju Samson joining Chennai is undoubtedly a wise decision for them in the meantime.
"It's interesting to note that Jadeja's salary was reduced from 18 crore to 14 crore. The crucial question is if Jadeja could be offered captaincy by Rajasthan. A new captain must be found. They have a number of options: youthful Dhruv Jurel has the appropriate attitude, Yashasvi Jaiswal has long dreamed of being captain, Riyan Parag led them in a few games last season, and Sam Curran is an overseas alternative. Ravindra Jadeja thus emerges as an intriguing contender for their leadership position", he added.
