Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been an integral part of the Indian cricket team since the early 2010s. Both of these players have been elite servants of Indian cricket. But the writing is pretty clear on the wall for both of these assets. The BCCI no longer considers them at the top of their game for the T20 format. And there is word around that both these players will not be considered or picked for the New Zealand T20I series at home. Here is an in-depth look at the same:

BCCI Official Says, “Looking at the Future” and hence Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma May be Dropped:

“Unfortunately, they won’t be picked or considered for the New Zealand series. It’s not about them being dropped or anything, we feel we need to move and prepare the team for the future. Finally, it is selectors who will pronounce the decision”, this is what the official had to say when enquired about the senior players. Besides Rohit and Virat, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Ravichandra Ashwin will not be considered for the shorter format.

BCCI Selection Panel to be Changed:

Till a new selection committee is appointed by the BCCI, the interim selection committee will have to select a squad for the New Zealand tour of India 2023. This will be the “sacked selection” committee. Here are a few improvements that have been suggested post the appointment of the new selection committee:

  • The Indian cricket team failed at the Aisa Cup 2022 which was a T20 format tournament. It also failed to win the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.
  • Hence, the BCCI believes that the selection body needs to have a person who has good knowledge of the T20 game.
  • The earlier body relied on a feedback system from the captain and coach, in this case, both Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid.
  •  But with the changed dynamics of the sport, it is necessary to scrap this old system.
  • A core group of players will have to be made for selection in the 2024 T20 World Cup like a core group made for the ODI World Cup 2023.

Virat Kohli has been the Second-Best T20 Batter for the Indian Cricket Team:

Considering Rohit Sharma and his numbers in the T20 game for the past two years, his being dropped off rested for some time can be considered. But Virat Kohli has been the second-best batter for the Indian T20 team in the past year. The best is Suryakumar Yadav who has been the best in the world. Virat has played crucial knocks in crucial games. The game against Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup. The game against Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup and his overall performance in Asia Cup 2022. It is just a bit unfair for a player to lose his spot despite performing to the best of his abilities.
