It was first played in the 2002-03 season. This year's edition is generating considerable buzz because Indian star batsmen Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be participating. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–2026, Virat Kohli will play for Delhi and Rohit Sharma for Mumbai. After the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instructed centrally contracted players to play domestic cricket when not on national duty, both players are scheduled to participate in domestic cricket.
